South Hadley, MA - Stanley L. Warner Jr., a revered professor emeritus of economics, devoted family man, and avid sportsman, passed away peacefully on November 22, 2025, at the age of 87.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1938 to Dorothy (Nelson) Warner and Stanley L. Warner Sr., Stan moved to the rural community of Hartland, Michigan as a young child. He completed his high school education in nearby Howell, where he balanced academics with athletics, playing on the school football team.

Stan's interest in academics was evident from the start. He earned his B.A. in economics from Albion College in 1960, his M.A. in economics from Michigan State University in 1962, and his Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University in 1966. It was at Albion where Stan met the love of his life, Signia Young. This September, they celebrated their sixty-fifth wedding anniversary.

His rigorous education led to a distinguished teaching career, with positions at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and Bucknell University. In 1973, he established himself as a long-time faculty member of the School of Critical Social Inquiry at Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts. At Hampshire, Stan's impact on students and the greater community spanned beyond his role of Professor of Economics. Student feedback often highlighted the sheer breadth of his knowledge, his warm personality, and his colorful attire, which was sourced almost exclusively from local thrift stores.

Stan's research interests were both broad and impactful, covering the structure of the American economy, environmental economics, and comparative economic systems. He was particularly concerned with the modern corporation, the political economy of capital mobility, and the social dimensions of workplace democracy. His later research focused on the economic and environmental impacts of hydroelectric development in northern Quebec, and the subsequent effects on the displaced Cree in the region, reflecting his deep commitment to applied ecological economics.

Beyond the lecture hall, Stan lived life with vigor. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, creating lifelong memories. He was an avid basketball player, fisherman, and gardener, and enjoyed traveling and sharing his witty sense of humor along the way. Stan was also known as a bit of a daredevil who never ran out of engaging stories to share.

Stan and Signia built a fulfilling life together, raising three children, exploring mutual interests, and devoting themselves to family and academic pursuits. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Signia; his children, Mitchel Warner (Janet), Heather Warner (Scott), and Ingrid Bryan (Sean); his five grandchildren: Nigel, Glenn, Alexandria, Riley, and Renee (Camryn). He also leaves behind a sister, Sylvia Warner; a brother, Nelson Warner; and many nieces, nephews, relatives & friends. Stan was predeceased by his sister, Chloe Warner Gamble.

A private celebration of life will be held by the family in the spring. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to an organization supporting environmental conservation initiatives.
