Thomas Breen Obituary

Thomas Breen

Whately, MA - Thomas Joseph Breen, passed away at Mass General Hospital – Boston on June 23, 2025 surrounded by his loved ones.

Tom was born in Northampton to Lillian (Blanchard) and Edward Breen on April 29, 1956. He was raised in Haydenville and attended Williamsburg School System. He graduated from Hampshire Regional High School in 1974, where he participated in baseball and basketball. Tom made the varsity teams for both sports in 8th grade. Tom was an avid sports enthusiast, whether participating or as a fan. After high school he continued playing basketball, softball, and golf in various leagues. Tom received his Associate Degree from Holyoke Community College. He most recently worked at Amherst College for 31 years, working his way up to stockroom manager for the custodial department, and retired in January 2019.

Tommy enjoyed camping and river fishing in his younger years. He transitioned to cabin rentals/hotels and boat fishing in his later years. Mary and Tommy also enjoyed longer trips visiting states as far away as California. Tom spent a lot of time in his yard creating a park-like atmosphere with a lush green yard with many flowering bushes, perennials, and annuals. He felt great joy receiving compliments from visitors and passersby. He always had the yard in tip-top condition for his annual cornhole tournament and Big Lou family golf tournament after party.

Tom is survived by his wife of 42 years, Mary (Jenkins) Breen and his beloved cats, Ruby and Riley; sisters Madelyn Breen of Haydenville and Mary (Breen) Dusseault and brother Robert "Bobby" Breen both of Florence; In-Laws Thomas "Tom" Jenkins, Carol Demerski; Lois and Robert "Bob" Bazluke, and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Tom was predeceased by his parents, brother Daniel "Danny" Breen, brothers-in-law Robert "Bob" Dusseault, David Jenkins and David Demerski.
