Victoria Kozera Obituary

VICTORIA KOZERA

Hatfield, MA - Victoria Lynn Kozera, a loving beautiful woman, passed away after a sudden illness that occurred while on an adventure tour in the Galapagos Islands. She and her husband had many hiking and adventure tours in the US, and on multiple continents, and the Galapagos was on top of her bucket list.

Victoria was born and grew up in Syracuse, NY the only child of Margaret Kogut and George Kogut (predeceased). She attended and graduated from Sacred Heart High School where she continued to attend reunions. After high school she attended Unity College in Maine and graduated from the University of Maine with a degree in environmental sciences. Throughout high school and college she vacationed with her parents and family friends camping in the Adirondacks enjoying many a campfire stories. After college she continued to live and work in Maine where she loved spending time with nature. Then fate struck, while serving as the maid of honor for her future sister-in-law Jessica Magdzuik she met and then spent the rest of her life with the best man at that wedding Don Kozera residing in Hadley and Hatfield, MA. Victoria and Don had been married for 41 years and it was obvious to everyone the passion, love, and respect they held for each other. Victoria was born to be a mother and she gave birth to Jacob and Rachael. Motherhood made Victoria glow. She stayed home during the early years to love, teach, and play with her children. It was important to Victoria that she be home for her children after school , so she attended AIC and received her master's degree in education. She found a passion teaching science and math in middle school first in Holyoke and then for most of her career in White Brook Middle School in Easthampton, MA.

Throughout their marriage Victoria and Don continued to adventure travel. Some highlights were backpacking in Iceland, biking through Ireland, exploring and hiking to base camp of Mt. Everest, African Safaris and climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro. Hiking the sacred trail to Machu Picchu was most memorable because the trip included family and her children. Weeks prior to Victoria's retirement Rover, the name she gave to the camper van was purchased and multiple trips across the country and Canada were enjoyed. Victoria was an avid lover of nature and hiker particularly with her dog Charlie and anyone else who wanted to come along.

Victoria leaves behind her mother Margaret Kogut of Syracuse NY, her husband Don Kozera of Hatfield, MA, her son Jacob Kozera and his wife Rachel of Ayer, MA. Her daughter Rachael Coughlin and husband Roger of Framingham, MA. Victoria longed to be a Babcia and cherished every minute with her grandchildren Madeleine and Landon Coughlin. Sisters and brothers-in-laws David & Jessica Kozera of Maryland, Susan and Michael Behn of Virginia and Margaret and Paul Amble of North Carolina. Nieces and nephews; Matthew Kozera and his wife Kate, Claire Kozera, Cavin, Sara and Dylan Amble and Skyler Behn. Victoria also leaves numerous cousins and close friends and her sisterhood who she could always count on as they counted on her.

There are no words to express how sorry we are to hear of Victoria's passing. We met Victoria and Don on our recent trip to the Galapagos Islands. She was warm and engaging from the moment we met. Our three boys were on the trip with us and we bonded over shared stories about motherhood over meals and while traveling to the islands. She absolutely beamed with pride when sharing stories of her kids, Jacob and Rachael and just glowed when talking about her grandchildren. She regaled us all with stories about the various trips she'd taken with Don, of their beautiful life together in Massachusetts, of teaching, and of her mother. Although we just met, I could tell Victoria never met a stranger, the way she opened her heart to everyone on the trip and I'm thankful our paths crossed, if only for a couple of days. I have no doubt that she loved her life and everyone in it and was beloved by everyone. May peace and comfort be with you all.

"Those we love don't go away.
They walk beside us every day.
Unseen, unheard, but always near.
Still loved, still missed, and very dear."

I had the pleasure of meeting Victoria and Don in June this year during a holiday on the Galápagos Islands.
I found Victoria to be an energetic, warm, friendly and generous person.
She had a spirit of adventure and a finely tuned sense of curiosity about people and the world.
I would have loved to have spent more time talking with her and to hear her reflections on travel and the impact that this had had on her and Don´s lives.
Regrettably our time together was tragically brief and I did not get this opportunity.
I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to Don and to Victoria and Don´s extended family.

I met Victoria on her long awaited Galapagos trip and since we were exactly the same age we definitely had a lot to say to each other especially on the flight from Quito to the Galapagos. She shared how happy she was that her daughter, son-in -law and most importantly that her two grandkids lived within an easy drive away. Another item to chat about on the flight was how fun her travels with Don, family and friends were. I send my heartfelt condolences to Don, Jacob and Rachael as Victoria was such a vibrant and friendly travel buddy, even for such a short time.

My deepest condolences to all of you. Vicky was my kids teacher at WBMS. When my daugher got sick with AML cancer in 2005, Vicky came to visit us in Westhampton MA at home and shared in honor of Sarah she was going to hike Kilimanjaro! We were blown away! My daughter Sarah and I have spoken about her many times since then, and my daughter share her passion for hiking to this day.

Don and Jake,
We cannot begin to express how saddened and shocked we am to hear this news. Only happy memories come to mind when we recall your family and having the privilege to coach Jake in soccer. Martha would often see Vickie at the BigY and talk about those days. Condolences seem insufficient but please know that we will keep you all in our thoughts and prayers.

To Donald and your whole family, I met Victoria through Charlie and her visits to West Street. She was so kind and cheerful. Just to have known her a little bit made such a difference in my life. My deepest condolences to you and your family. I believe she is an Angel holding all of you in her care now.

Vic was a gem who radiated kindness and love. You didn´t need to know her very well to see that she left smiles wherever she went. I feel blessed having gotten to know her and her family. My heart goes out to Don, Jacob, Rachael and families.

Dear Rachael, Jacob and Don, I was so saddened to hear of the passing of your mom and wife. Vic and I were colleagues at WBMS for many years. My special memory is when we flew to Philly together to make sure the hotel was ready for our 8th grade students. When that was done, we walked and walked the city and she was such fun! We shared stories of you two "kids" and my "only". Another time, she brought me to CooleyDick ER in your brand new Prius! As everyone has posted, she was a wonderful person!
