William Erickson Obituary

William G. Erickson

Southampton, MA - William G. Erickson, a life-long educator and resident of Southampton, passed away in February at the age of 83.

After completing his undergraduate degree at Fitchburg State College, Bill began his long career in education as a math and physics teacher, first in central Massachusetts and later at Hopkins Academy in Hadley. As a school principal in Easthampton, he helped design and launch the innovative White Brook Middle School, which featured team teaching and flexible classroom layouts. He completed his doctoral degree in education at UMass, where he also taught graduate-level courses.

Bill later served as an Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Easthampton, as Superintendent of Schools in a regional school district in Vermont, as Superintendent in the Hampshire Regional School District for many years, and as Interim Superintendent of the Northampton Public Schools in 2010. In 2005 he was awarded the Christos Daoulas Award, honoring his dedication to school leadership and significant contributions to the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents (M.A.S.S.). After retirement, he remained active in M.A.S.S., helping to organize their annual conference, and he consulted on statewide superintendent searches. He also administered a superintendents' round-table through the Hampshire Educational Collaborative.

Bill was a dedicated member of the Southampton Lions Club for many decades. He cared deeply about the club's mission and devoted an extensive amount of time to assisting with various charitable projects. He won the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, the highest honor given by Lions International, recognizing individuals demonstrating exceptional service. He served as the secretary of the Southampton Lions Club right up until the last few days of his life.

In his free time, Bill enjoyed singing, first in a barbershop quartet and later with jazz groups in the Pioneer Valley. He had learned to read music and to play piano from his mother, who raised him in the Swedish neighborhood of Worcester. A lover of trains and maps, he enjoyed travel, and for many years Bill and his wife Joy made an annual trip to Europe. While Joy skied, Bill spent a week journeying by train through Switzerland, Austria, Germany, or Italy, meeting up with Joy in a European city at trip's end.

Bill met Joy, the love of his life, in high school, and they were married for 60 years. His two children, Kristen and Kurt, became teachers, as did two of his grandchildren, William and Christopher Bass, who continue his legacy of working with middle school students. Also mourning his loss are his son-in-law, Mark Curnin, his daughter-in-law, Erica Frieswick, and two young grandchildren, Avery and Miles.

Bill was above all a humanitarian, and in honoring him, in lieu of flowers, we invite people to donate to a scholarship fund established in his name: Southampton Lions Club, c/o Bank ESB, P.O. Box 274, Southampton, MA 01073, subject line William G. Erickson Scholarship Fund.

A private memorial service for family and friends will be held in the spring.

Fond memories of the years I taught at EHS with him as my principal and friend. It was always a treat to see him around town after we were retired.

One of my favorite cousins, Bill was kind to me when we were kids and always clever and funny. Although he lived a bit of a distance away (Southampton / Natick), he and Joy were always there for family weddings and cousin gatherings.

He will be sorely missed. Rest in peace, Billy.

Mr. Erickson was my high school principal & he was a wonderful educator. He was always very kind, patient & very fair with all the shenanigans that happened.
I also remember him at our different dance events busting a move. He was always the "very cool" principal.
Sounds like he had a wonderful long & well loved life. He will be remembered. Condolences to all the family & friends. Hugs!

We met Bill when we both started our teaching careers at WBMS. He was the best principal we ever had. His door was always open and you always felt so comfortable conversing with him about any problem, concern, etc. Bill attended our wedding with his wife Joy in 1978 and was one of the last to leave. I loved receiving his witty memos and still have them to reflect upon. He certainly was a man of many interests, loved people and will be missed!

I met Bill in 1970 when he hired me as one of his secretaries at Center School in Easthampton. He was the best boss I ever had in my long career of working in schools. He was a man of integrity, wisdom, compassion, caring and kindness. I saw him at Forbes Library when he sang with the barbershop quartet. A man of many talents. My deepest condolences to the Erickson family.

Bill and I were fellow Principals for many years in Easthampton. ALWAYS the consummate gentleman and a pleasure to be with.
I can best illustrate the kind of person Bill was by this:
Last summer was the 50th anniversary of my appointment as Principal of Maple School as noted in the Gazette. Only Bill was so kind to forward a handwritten note of congratulations. I still have that memo.
My most sincere condolences to the Erickson family.

When I was Director of the Collaborative in Northampton, I had the honor and joy of knowing Bill for a number of years. A man of integrity, wisdom, and compassion, he was much respected throughout the state and was an important leader, especially in western MA, in advocating for opportunities, access, and outcomes for all students. Bill - you will be missed!

Bill was my first and best principal. He was an incredibly leader and was responsible for forming my early years as a teacher. My teaching career was the best because of Bill. I will always have a place in my heart for him!

"Mr.Erickson" was simply the best! His office was always open to us kids at White Brook and now I know how annoying we must have been! As an adult, I enjoyed seeing him at local jazz concerts - A consummate cool cat. My condolences to the family.

Bill hired me back in 1976 at White Brook Middle School. I have so many fond memories of those years working under his direction. Later I was on the school committee when he was Superintendent at Hampshire Regional. He was always so very kind and considerate to everyone. I learned so much from him. I´m so sorry for his loss to his family and community.

Bill and I were colleagues for many years at the Hampshire Regional Superintendent´s office in Westhampton. A true educator, Bill encouraged me to take advantage of every opportunity to grow professionally. He modeled working hard, listening compassionately, building teams, enjoying hobbies, following interests, and interjecting a good pun at least once a day! My condolences to Joy, Kristen, Kurt and their families.
