Phyllis J. (McClanahan) Malcom, a former resident of Corvallis, passed away Tuesday, September 30, 2025, in the care of hospice in Aldie, VA, after sustaining a fall and a brief hospitalization.
Phyllis was born January 13, 1932 in Lecompton, KS to Philip L. McClanahan and Miriam H. Weis. Her family moved to the Dever-Conner area of Albany in 1936. She was the oldest of 8 children. She graduated from (West) Albany High School in 1949. After attending Simpson Bible College in Seattle for 2 years, she returned home to care for her mom who was diagnosed with cancer.
Job opportunities and adventure took her to San Francisco in 1957, returning to the Albany area in 1959. She began working for an optometrist in Corvallis, and enjoyed that job for 15 years. In 1976, she went to work for Hewlett-Packard in Corvallis as an accountant - a dream job for her. When her husband Bill contemplated retiring from the Corvallis Fire Department, she interviewed for another job within HP, this time at their corporate headquarters in the Bay area of California, which she started in 1986. She ended her career as administrator of employee stock options, which was her favorite job of all, retiring in 1997. She moved to Virginia to be with her daughter's family in 2002.
She married William (Bill) Malcom in January, 1963, who preceded her in death in 2012.
She is survived by step-daughter and son-in-law Debbie and Lee David of Amarillo, TX, daughter and son-in-law Suzy and Mike Bohnet of Herndon, VA; grandchildren Tiffany and Amando Vasquez of Amarillo, TX, Christina & Yoshiya Inaba of Omura, Nagasaki, Japan, and Emily & Josiah Dawson of Waterford, MI; and great-grandchildren Luke Howell, Charlotte Howell, Amando Vasquez and Zoe Vasquez of Amarillo, TX.
She is also survived by brothers James (Jim) McClanahan of Albany, John McClanahan of Pahrump, NV, Michael McClanahan of Lebanon, and sisters Janet Sheffield of Jefferson, and Sharon Woods of Salem; and all their families, which include many nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers David McClanahan of Odessa, WA and Robert (Bob) McClanahan of Phoenix, AZ. She was loved, and will be missed, by all who knew her.
A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 11th at Fisher Funeral Home, 306 SW Washington St. in Albany.
