Thomas Johnson Obituary

Thomas Johnson

August 4, 1942 - November 19, 2025

Tom was born in Joliet, and was raised nearby, in Lockport, Ill. The second of four boys, he enjoyed spending time outdoors and was active in Boy Scouts, eventually earning the rank of Eagle Scout. He graduated from Lockport Township High School in 1960. From there, he attended community college and then Southern Illinois University to study petroleum geology. While working as a truck driver to afford college, he was drafted into the army and served a full tour in the Republic of Vietnam. After being discharged, he found his way to Oregon and used his GI bill to complete a degree in earth science education at Oregon College of Education. While in Monmouth, he fell in love with his future wife. Tom graduated in 1976 and started his career at Sweet Home Junior High, teaching earth science and as the girls' basketball coach. He also helped found the Ames Creek Project where students worked with the U.S. Forest Service to rehabilitate Ames Creek.

He and his love, Anne, married in 1980 and five years later, adopted their son David. They eventually built their dream home in the woods outside of Sodaville where they retired and enjoyed their forest home. Tom developed a passion for traditional archery and woodworking.

Tom is survived by his brother, David; wife, Anne; son, David, and daughter-in-law, Denise; and his two grandsons.

An open-house celebrating Tom's life will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, December 13, 2025, at the Johnson residence. The family invites all who knew him to come and share memories.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Oregon Food Bank. Huston-Jost Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
