Evansville, WI - Evansville - John (Jack) McElroy, age 91, passed away at the Evansville Manor on Monday, January 13th, 2025. Jack was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was born on June 20th, 1933, in Madison, Wisconsin to George and Grace (Fleury) McElroy. He grew up in Middleton and subsequently moved to Oregon at a young age. He attended Oregon High School and upon graduation enrolled at Madison Business College, graduating with an Associate's degree in 1952.
On March 8th, 1952, he married his high-school sweetheart, Dorothy Winch. Following graduation from Madison Business college with an accounting degree, Jack and Dorothy moved to Evansville, Wisconsin where he worked at Baker Manufacturing for 42 years, starting as an. accountant and retiring as the financial controller in June, 1995.
Jack was a staple in Evansville and had a lifelong commitment to community service. He was a lifelong member of the Evansville United Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge. He helped build the Evansville Golf Course in 1964 and was a founding member of the Evansville Golf Association. He volunteered as a bookkeeper for the Evansville High School boys' basketball team for over 20 years and also taught accounting for Blackhawk Technical college adult evening classes. Upon his retirement from Baker manufacturing in 1995, he continued to volunteer for many years as the financial bookkeeper for the Evansville Ecumenical Care Closet.
Jack was passionate about golfing and Wisconsin Sports. He was a Wisconsin Badger football Season Ticket holder, which culminated with his attendance at the 1994 Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. He also attended the infamous "Ice Bowl" between the Packers and Cowboys in 1967 and he rarely missed watching or listening to the Milwaukee Brewers. If he wasn't on the golf course, he was most likely attending the sporting events of his children and grandchildren.
Jack was well known for his love of grilling. Whether it was the Tuesday night neighborhood grill outs on Ladies Golf night or simply making dinner for the family. He was known for his unorthodox grilling methods where his timer was the number of old-fashions or martini's he had, or on a real hot day, how many cold beers.
Jack was well known for his attention to detail. His lawn was always immaculate, that picture on the wall had to be straight, and he spent countless hours balancing family members checkbooks, always looking for that "nickel" error. And yet In between all his family and personal activities, he always found time to watch Wheel of Fortune and work on crossword puzzles.
Jack is survived by his wife of 72 years, Dorothy (Winch) McElroy of Evansville, his three children Mike McElroy, Pat Krause, Scott (Lynae) McElroy, his three grandchildren, Jennie (Jay), Amanda, Matthew (Marisol), his three Great Grandchildren, Jadon, Jordyn, & Meilani, his Brother George (Lamb) McElroy. Jack was preceded in death by his daughter Jill McElroy, parents, George and Grace McElroy, and his two sisters, Arlene Spink and Marge Zimmerlee.
