Steve Doiel
June 8, 2023
I met Phil years ago when I was a bass player in Janesville. I was playing gig at Slick's bar and during a break this young long hair sat next to me and said "Hi, I'm Phil Trumpy and I really love what you do on bass. I wish I could play like that." My head got big and I said "Hi, I'm Steve Doiel and proud to hear that. We almost have the same haircut, too. But my break is up and the band is waiting as usual. All you gotta do is keep playing that bass and never stop." He took that to heart, I think.
About a year later, I stopped into a late night place and there up on the stage is that Phil Trumpy kid just kickin' into high gear and spreading musical colossus! I'm a little put off by how good this kid is, so I carefully stagger over and politely yell "You told me you couldn't play, you young whipper snapper!" He looks up and laughs, and thus begins a friendship that finds us playing some gigs together now and then.
One of my favorite memories is when I found Phil at a local gig sporting the most beautiful, best sounding new Fender bass I had ever seen. Seething with jealously, I asked him if his old friend could play a little on it, seeing as I was so happy for him. He said "Sure, strap it on!" Best PLAYING bass on earth, too. Looki.g for something nice to say, I belted "But JEEZ, Phil, it weighs a ton! No wonder you're so short!" He said "Let go my bass, you old whipper snapper!"
Now Phil is gone, and I can't believe the empty space. I feel like I always took him for granted. I've always believed that when we pass, we go to a place where we are given all the time we need to figure out what we want to do next, whatever that may be. Phil took that to heart, I think.
