Bill McElhaney Obituary

Bill C. McElhaney November 16, 1940 – March 3, 2011 Bill McElhaney was born in Little Rock, Arkansas to Billie and Jack McElhaney. Bill and his family moved from rural Arkansas to Hermosa Beach, California in 1952 where he spent his teen years and graduated from Mira Costa High School in 1958. After a semester of college at USC where he played football for the Trojans, Bill served in the U.S. Army as a cryptologist from 1961 to 1963. Most of his Army career was spent in Karlsruhe, Germany. After leaving the Army as a Sergeant, Bill returned to southern California where he started his career as a hairstylist. After growing weary of the southern California lifestyle in the late 1960's, Bill made a spur of the moment move to the Colorado Rockies and settled in what was then a small ski village, Vail. There, he continued to perfect his craft of hairdressing and picking up a new one, skiing. Bill loved Colorado so much that he decided to invite his family in California to move east. His mother and brother both bought property in Grand Junction, Colorado. Bill would spend the remainder of his life in Grand Junction working as a hairstylist and owned and operated several different salons in the area. His clientele were all fiercely loyal and he considered them all dear friends. Bill is survived by his son, Brock of Denver, Colorado and his daughter, Erin of Torrance, California and this three grandsons also of Torrance, California. An open house to is be held on Saturday, March 12, 2011, 958 Teller Ave. from 2 - 5:00 p.m. to celebrate his life.

I met Bill at the T-Bone Bar and Restaurant when I first moved to Grand Junction in 1978. He was sitting with mutual friends and one of the first things he said to me was, "You have a great head of hair, but your hairstyle doesn't do you justice. I'll give you a free haircut if you let me do what I want." For some reason, I said "ok." He has been cutting my hair (the way HE wants) ever since. He was not just my hairstylist. He was my friend and I will miss him tremendously. May Bill live on in all of our memories. My heart goes out to his family.

My father was not just a wonderful dad, but my best friend. I don't think i could have been more fortunate to have him as my father. He lived a wonderful, full life. I know that he impacted everyone he met and played a huge roll in a lot of lives here in Grand Junction. I am truly thankful for the wonderful experiences i was able to share with him and I am going to miss and remember him everyday for the rest of my life. Thank you dad for being the best. I love you! Your son, Brock.

Bill had about as interesting a life as it gets. He was good at everything he tried and as one of his customers, I got to enjoy his skills and all his wonderful stories of a life well lived. Rest in Peace.
