Janet Smallwood Obituary

Janet Ann Smallwood

December 31, 1940 - February 1, 2021

Janet Ann Smallwood died peacefully on February 1, 2021, at the Mike and Kay Ferris Care Center in Grand Junction, Colorado, following a lengthy illness.

Janet was born, the first child of Charles and Myrtle Casteel, on December 31, 1940, in Glenwood Springs, Colorado; the addition of sister, Joan and brother, Joe, came along soon after. Janet attended school in Glenwood Springs into her high school years when she then married Elmer Smallwood. She and Elmer had three sons, Edward Ray, Allen Dean, and Kenneth Lee.

Janet and her family lived primarily in the Glenwood Springs area, with a brief time spent in Grand Junction. She was a homemaker, a seamstress, and provided childcare early in their lives together. Elmer died in 1997, when he and Janet were living in Gillette, Wyoming, after which Janet returned to Grand Junction.

She then worked for many years providing retail customer service at the Herbergers store in the Mesa Mall, where she made many life-long friends. Janet also enjoyed bowling on leagues, continuing well into her 70's. She enjoyed traveling with her dear friend, Patty; seeing many sights in the States, and a few overseas. Janet kept her hands busy, crocheting baby blankets and embroidering quilts for every new baby in the family since the 1960's!

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer; her parents, Charles and Myrtle Casteel, and son, Edward. Surviving Janet are her sister, Joan (John) Wright, and brother, Joe Casteel, both of Grand Junction; sons, Allen (Sharon), of Buffalo, Wyoming, and Kenneth, of Grand Junction; ten grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren.

During Janet's illness, she was provided care at home from her wonderful caregivers, Lois and Sandra, and her siblings also attended to every need. HopeWest Hospice provided medical and personal care for four years prior to, and carefully assisted her, in death, for which the family is eternally grateful.

No services are planned at this time, due to Covid 19 restrictions. The family requests that any gifts or donations be made to HopeWest Hospice, 3090B North 12th Street, Grand Junction, CO 81506.
