Phyllis Hollingsworth Obituary

Phyllis D. Hollingsworth October 1, 1923 – March 20, 2012 Mary Phyllis Dyer Hollingsworth passed away March 20, 2012. Born in Weiser, Idaho, she was the youngest of two children born to Joseph and Martha Dyer. She enjoyed a happy and comfortable childhood which often included outings involving the dozens of cousins and relatives in the area. Phyllis attended schools in Ontario, Oregon, also the University of Oregon in Eugene, and was an active member of the Delta Gamma Sorority. Like everyone else of her generation, Phyllis' life changed forever with the advent of World War II. During the war she met a young navel aviator named Dale Hollingsworth who was in Ontario for pilot's training. Letters and correspondence followed, and they married on July 8, 1946. They were blessed with 60 years of marriage before Dale passed in 2006. Phyllis and Dale moved their family to Grand Junction in 1957, and raised their six children in a valley she dearly loved. Phyllis interests included golf, reading, travel, and all sports. She was active in Friday Book Club, Effective Parents Project, St. Bridget's Circle, DU, numerous bridge groups and a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. One of her proudest accomplishments was receiving her pilot's license in 1943, soloing after eight hours training. She is survived by her six children, Joan of Glenwood Springs; Mary (Jim Verdieck); Anne (Jack Connolly), and Janet of Grand Junction; Jim (Cathy) of Durango, and John of Salt Lake City; grandchildren, Kelly Kramer, Andrew (Breanna) Kramer, Anne McCorkle, John Verdieck, Brian Hollingsworth, and Kimberly Hollingsworth as well as two great-grandchildren, Brianna Sterkel and Adalyn Kramer. A funeral mass will be held Monday, April 2nd at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Memorial contributions can be made to Mountain Valley Developmental Services, PO Box 338, Glenwood Springs, CO 81602 in the name of Joan Hollingsworth.

Phyllis was one of the nicest and most sincere people I've known. A wonderful family, husband, and kind to everyone. Those we love don't go away, the walk beside us every day, unheard, unseen, but always near. Still loved, still missed, and forever dear. Blessings to her family.

I was most sad to hear of your Mother's passing. As you know your whole family meant a great deal to me. I'm happy you had her for as long as you did, and I'm sure she left a wonderful rainbow of memories for all of you and your children. I visited with her on the phone last year and as usual she was cheery and sounded happy and busy. Please accept my sincere sympathy, many will miss her. She set a wonderful example for all who knew her.
