Daphene Vasut

NORA SPRINGS - Daphene Vasut, 72, 907 W. Congress St., Nora Springs, died Tuesday (May 6, 2008) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, May 9, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 101 N. Hawkeye in Nora Springs, with the Rev. Dr Jennifer Edinger officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Lakeside Cemetery, Eagle Lake, Texas.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye, Nora Springs.

Memorials may be given to the Daphene Vasut Memorial Fund.

Daphene was born Dec. 30, 1935, in Columbus, Texas, the daughter of David and Mary (Schmidt) Zahradnick. Daphene attended school in Eagle Lake, Texas. She married Emil Vasut Sr. on Nov. 15, 1953, in Eagle Lake where they lived and farmed. She later worked at the F & W Food Market in Garwood, Texas. She also worked at Dan's Minute Stop in Eagle Lake. She moved to Nashua to be close to her daughter in 1996, later moved to Charles City and in 1998 to Nora Springs Care Center.

Daphene enjoyed embroidering, baking, shopping, playing dominos, reading and especially reading the Bible. She did a lot of writing letters and playing pool. Everyone she cared about she gave them a nickname. She was known by her grandkids as MeeMaw. Daphene was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Eagle Lake, Texas, and St. John's Lutheran Church in Nashua.

Daphene is survived by her three children, Rosemary Tobin and her husband, Robert, of Charles City, Emil Vasut Jr. and his fiancée, Vonda Obermeier, of Charles City, and Paul Vasut and his wife, Patricia, of Eagle Lake, Texas; two grandchildren, Karl and Kelly Vasut of Eagle Lake, Texas; sister, Evelyn Hunick of Jacinto City, Texas, and brother Robert Zahradnick and his wife, Bobbie, of Sandston, Va.; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Emil (Sept. 28, 1996); and one sister, Dorothy Newsom.
