Matthew A. Flemming, MD

July 1, 1963-November 26, 2020

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Matthew Allen Flemming, MD on November 26, 2020. In his life he had many accomplishments but none more cherished than being a father to his beloved children Emma, William, and Henry.

Born in Fredericton, New Brunswick to Neil and Shirley Flemming, Matthew was always a shining star. The family moved to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, when he was young. From his Pee Wee hockey days, to a short but proud stint at the Island's first Burger King, a time as Badminton champion of PEI, and then to his several years pursuing an International Baccalaureate (IB) at the prestigious Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific, Matthew was always a high achiever. After receiving his IB, Matthew went to McGill University where he graduated with both a B.S. and an M.S. degree. He graduated from Albany Medical College in 1991 where he was awarded the Lamb Foundation Prize. This award was given to senior students who showed the most sympathetic and kindly understanding dealing with patients and who had most nearly approached the ideal in doctor/patient relationships.

After Medical School, Matthew pursued an Internal Medicine Residency at Temple University Hospital where he was awarded Chief Residency before moving to Ann Arbor to become a Fellow in Cardiac Electrophysiology at the University of Michigan Hospital. As a physician, Matthew practiced first in Grosse Pointe, MI, and then later with Iowa Heart in Des Moines and next Mason City Clinic in Mason City, IA. Patients and friends alike always considered him to be the most caring of physicians with keen diagnostic skills and an unparalleled bedside manner. He loved practicing medicine and patients loved him. When not practicing medicine or being with his children, Matthew was happiest on the golf course.

Charming, witty, and ever so handsome, friends and family will miss him dearly. Many fond memories will help to soothe the pain of his loss as will the comfort of seeing him live on through his beautiful children. Matthew is survived in life by his mother, Shirley Flemming of Charlottetown, PEI; brother Stephen (Massiel); brother John; and niece Chelsy Cole. He also leaves to this world his precious daughter, Emma Flemming, and his two sweet sons William and Henry Flemming

To honor the life of Matthew donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in Matthew's name.

Hello. I was so sorry to hear about Matthew's passing. Matthew and I met at Pearson College and then shared a flat in Montreal for 2 years while at McGill (along with Mikale Joly, also from Pearson, who shared the flat with us for one of those years). We lost touch after, as too many of us do. Always hoped we'd get in touch again. Alas, it will not be. My sincere condolences to family and loved ones. Matthew was a kind soul. He will be missed.

I treasure the memories of Matthew, that now seem like a fleeting moment in our lives. In loving memory of a wonderful person that I am glad to have met at Pearson College in 1980. May he rest in peace and my sincerest condolences to his family.

I first met Matthew in 1980 at Pearson College, where we both represented Canada's tiniest province, Prince Edward Island. We became fast friends during the year we studied together and I will never forget his mischievous smile, caring heart and wonderful sense of humour. In the latter part of the school year, I was sick in bed for several weeks, during which time Matthew visited regularly, often bringing gifts to lift my spirits. One of those gifts, a humorous and huggable "Teddy Pig", became a treasured possession that remains with me to this day. I honestly can't say how often that little pig, along with the memory of Matthew's friendship comforted me, on dark days. Though we lost touch after he moved to the US - something I deeply regret now - I never forgot him. Sincerest condolences to all who loved Matt - particularly, his mum, siblings and children. He was a very special person, who will be remembered with gratitude and love by many.

Several years ago I was referred to Dr. Flemming. I had some vague yet concerning symptoms and had been to a few specialists prior to seeing him. I was exhausted and I was so scared. I had begun to second guess myself and believe I had created the issues in my mind. I will NEVER forget the moment Dr. Flemming held my hand and said “You are not crazy and I will help you figure this out”. It turned out to be something very manageable. His compassion in that moment and in the care that followed has stuck with me all these years. When I reflect back to that time in my life I reflect with immense gratitude for the empathy and compassion he showed me.
To all that loved him- thank you for sharing him with the world- he made a tremendous difference in mine.

My sincere condolences to Matthew's entire family. We were friends at Pearson and shared an appartment in Montreal, rue Durocher, when he was at McGill. Daniel was our third roommate. We had good times together, Matthew worked hard at his schooling, and it certainly led him to great accomplishments. I am sad to learn that he left this world so early.

Matthew was my first year roommate during my second year (1980/81) at Lester B Pearson College of the Pacific. After our time together there he kept a distance but he was such a nice guy, best smile, a very focused, non-nerdy people oriented physician. He gave me & so many people such positive vibes & moments. I also still remember the rides I had with him in his Corvette many, many years ago. Heartbreaking. Hug you my friend.❤

I was shocked and saddened to see Dr. Flemming has passed away. He was my husbands Dr. in 2004 when he had his 9 1/2 hour ablation. I remember him coming to me and giving me updates and reassured me all was ok. He was so kind and gentle. We were sorry to see him leave Des Moines.
My sympathy to the family. I’m sure my husband (Cecil)is welcoming him to heaven!
