Mason City-Ralph Luna, 90, of Mason City, passed away at the Muse Norris Inpatient Unit- Hospice of North Iowa, on Wednesday (June 20, 2018).
Funeral services will be held at 1:30pm on Saturday (June 23, 2018) at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St. NE, Mason City with an Elder from Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5pm until 7pm on Friday (June 22, 2018) at the funeral chapel.
Ralph was born in San Antonio, Texas on September 24, 1927 to Antonio and Ernestina Luna. He was united in marriage to Minerva Perez on April 5, 1949. After serving in WW II Ralph and Minnie moved to Hayfield, Iowa and worked for the Lewerke family. They say he could pick up 100lb bags in each hand and one in his teeth just to show off while working. Ralph and his sisters would load 13 box cars of potatoes during the produce season. He worked at the Jacob E Decker meat packing plant as an engineer in the powerplant for 26 years. He would blow the noon whistle for all of Mason City to hear. After his retirement Ralph and Minnie would own and operate the Barrell Lounge and the Roadrunner in Mason City.
Ralph loved to plant all kinds of vegetables in his garden, He also liked to watch the Minnesota Twins, Green Bay Packers, Tiger Woods. He enjoyed his Mexican movies, listening to his Spanish songs on his CDs and singing along with them. There wasn't much Ralph couldn't do. He could do carpentry, electrical, plumbing, rebuild any engine cut hair for all the boys when they were young and helped roof many homes with his son.
Ralph is survived by his wife of 69 years Minerva (Minnie); sons, Ralph of Mason City and David (special friend Darlene) of Ramsey, MN., daughters Sylvia Kalke (Roger) of Oskaloosa, IA and Yolanda Halferty (Don) of North Liberty, IA; siblings, Margaret Funk of
Mason City, IA, Nancy Wilkerson (Arnie) of Sacramento, Ca., Joe Luna of Mason City, IA, David Luna (Joan) of Belleview, IL and Orfa (Linda) VanDusseldorp (Gary) of Mason City, IA, as well as many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents Antonio and Ernestina Luna, sister Cruz Garza, brother Leo Luna, and his sons Reynaldo (Hector) Luna and Dennis (Richie) Luna.
