Fred Mouw Obituary

Anacortes, WA - Fred Milton Mouw, 89 of Anacortes, was called home to the loving arms of Jesus on October 9, 2024 surrounded by his loving family.

Fred was born on September 5, 1935 in Leota, Minnesota to Henry and Bertha Mouw. Upon graduating, Fred moved to Oak Harbor, Washington where he worked for Oak Harbor Freight, Columbia Valley and DeJong Masonry.

With unstoppable determination, that would be his trademark in so many of his life's endeavors, he set out to marry his best friend and one true love, Hilda Van Ossenbruggen on July 22, 1960, where they enjoyed 64 years of marriage and welcomed three daughters.

Fred was a member of Gideon's International and a member of First Baptist Church where he served for many years.

Fred worked many years at Copeland Lumber and Frontier Industries in Anacortes, where he had coffee brewing by 4:00 am eagerly waiting for the contractors to arrive. Fred was blessed with the most incredible retirement party, put on by Frontier Industries, where he was surrounded by so many people who loved him.

Fred enjoyed hunting, possibly more than anyone that we have met before. He had the privilege of taking many amazing hunting trips with both friends and family. He was a proud card-carrying member of the NRA. Fred was also able to take a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Holland as well as spending time in Hawaii.

As Fred's health began to decline there was a beautiful refinement. He now saw and experienced, like never before, that faith and family were truly his greatest treasures. Listening to hymns and Scripture would move him to tears, and yet that naughty Mouw smile was ever present.

Fred is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, John Harlon, and his son-in-law, Gary Knudson. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Hilda; daughters: Lisa (Don Gorans), Sheryl (Cory Rein), and Sherri ( Jim VanderStoep); siblings: John's widow, Gloria, Bruce (Cathy) Mouw, Joyce (LeRoy DeJong), Mignon (Robert Zylstra) and Bonnie (Ron DeJong);grandchildren: Haley Herboth (DJ), Abby (Nick Nerud), Grace Rein, Morgan Knudson, Mary (Daniel Lee), Faith VanderStoep, Carrie (Brandon Scheevel), Craig (Jen) VanderStoep, and great grandchildren, Layla Herboth, Calvin Lee and coming soon, baby Nerud.

"He will leave a hole in our hearts that no one can fill, but we will see him again, in Heaven with Jesus one day; until then, we love you more than words can say."

See you on the other side Fred!

I was baptized with Fred when I was 12 years old at Anacortes First Baptist Church. Such a sweet person and a wonderful greeter.

Prayers for family and friends as we will miss him. May fond memories always bring comfort as well as the peace of knowing we will meet again as one big Heavenly family.
