Jose Zavala Obituary

Sedro-Woolley - Jose (Joe) Zavala, age 71, of Sedro Woolley, WA, passed away peacefully at home on May 30, 2022. He was born on June 23, 1950, in Brownsville, TX to Emilio and Carmen (Cuevas) Zavala.

He graduated in 1969, from Burlington Edison High School. He was an outstanding athlete that excelled in every sport he played, but if you knew him, you knew Baseball was his sport. Shortly after graduating Jose enlisted in the Army where he served his country for two years.

In 1973 he married Janey Garcia and made his living working in the lumber industry for over 30 years. Outside of work, he enjoyed coaching. He was incredibly involved in sports and loved to coach both his sons and grandsons. When he was not coaching, you would find him at every sporting event, hands crossed, standing on the sidelines. Jose was not just a diligent worker, and a coach, he was also a family-oriented person that devoted his life to protecting and caring for those he loved.

He is survived by his 3 children Jose (JJ) Zavala of Burlington, Amy Zavala-Dean (Jason) of Sedro Woolley, Anthony (Tony) Zavala of Burlington, grandchildren, Emilio Adam Zavala, Andrew Dean, Brandon Dean, Anthony Zavala Jr., Isaac Zavala, Vincent Zavala, great-granddaughters Luciana Mae (Lucy) Zavala, Ella Marie Rose Zavala, brother Juan Zavala of Harlingen, TX, sisters Lucy Hatcher of Cleveland, Ohio, Janie De La Fuente of Santa Rosa, TX, and numerous nieces, and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, three sisters, and his little buddy Rocco.

Thank you for being a dad, grandpa, Papa Joe, hero, coach, and more importantly, just being you. Thank you for the lives you touched and the positive impacts you have made on others. We love you and will miss you very much. You will forever be in our hearts.

A celebration of life will take place at a later date.

Joe and I were classmates in high school and we played football together all four years. Joe was a very tough competitor and a terrific teammate. He was always friendly with a fine sense of humor. I regret that we lost contact after high school but whenever his name came up in a discussion, it was always favorable and positive. That he was a superb family man. You have my sincere condolences and may you thoughts of Joe provide you with comfort.

Sorry to hear this from JJ. Your Dad was a great man. Quiet but he could play ball. When I started playing softball when baseball was over for me, Joe and I became fast friends. We both loved to win. I can remember playing ball with Joe and little JJ following us everywhere! Even though we were years apart in age when I would see Joe later at sporting events of our kids we would always give each other a hug. Not really a big hugger in public but if you were Joe´s friend, you were in. I will miss my friend greatly. I told JJ I wish I could go back and have one more game with him! Loved him! So sorry for your loss.
