Richard Gaynor "Dick" Chapman

1936 - 2025

Anacortes - Born in Portland, Oregon, and raised by his adoptive parents, Frank and Prudence Chapman, Dick spent his formative years in Oregon, including a BA in Business Admin from Lewis & Clark College, before building a successful career in the printing industry in Fresno, California. After an early retirement, he made Anacortes, Washington, his home-a community he grew to love deeply. In 1994, Dick married Nancy, and together they built a rich life full of family, friendship, and community involvement.

Known for his civic spirit, Dick was the first president of the Fidalgo Island Rotary, along with serving on the board for a dozen nonprofits and mentoring through the Big Brothers program. His commitment to community extended beyond service-his estate includes generous bequests to several local tribes and nonprofits.

Dick was also a tireless "project guy," never happier than when he had something to build, fix, or restore. Among his many endeavors were preserving a historic home on Guemes Island, relocating and saving the Westminster Church Manse in Anacortes, and restoring classic 1950s and 1960s Willys Jeeps.

In his later years, Dick's greatest joy came from being Pipa or Grandpa to his five grandchildren-Jack, Kena, Kate, Max, and Emmett-who adored his playfulness. In his final years, he was lovingly supported by his stepchildren, Dave (Brenda) and Karen (Rick). He is also survived by his cousin Katherine Ford and stepbrother John Vosmek

Dick was a classic gentleman-handsome, steadfast, thoughtful, and quietly generous. He loved his vinyl records, his daily newspaper, and his Chivas neat. He will be remembered with deep affection by family, friends, and the many people whose lives he touched through his service and friendship.
