Anacortes - Roger could get a smile or laugh out of anyone, even sitting in his dental chair. Jokes to take you away from where you were, stories of his Navy days or comments on the current condition of politics, the weather, his cat, human foibles.
Roger was born in 1931 in St. Louis. He moved to Southern California with his family in 1939. They settled in the Long Beach area where he enjoyed fishing, body surfing, and just wandering the beach with his friends.
He and Nancy married in Los Gatos, California, in 1977, moved in Anacortes in 1980, bought a dental practice, and built their dream home at Biz Point. Roger worked right along-side the contractors!
After retirement in 1990, he volunteered for a month at the St. Jude's Hospital in St. Lucia in the West Indies to head their dental clinic. He had many facets to his life. Pilot, a creative woodworker, and he could fix anything. Roger would be so pleased to know that the shop where he spent so much time and made the beautiful furniture has a new life and purpose. It is now the Back Alley Canoe Works where beautiful canoes are being restored and built.
One of his joys was cruising in Europe in his motor vessel "Foreign Affair. He and Nancy took a bike and barge trip in 1998 in The Netherlands. They had so much fun that the next year they bought a boat and went over to Europe in the summers for 4 years. Then a 4-year hiatus and a new bigger (of course) boat for another 7 years. They cruised the canals and rivers in France, The Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. Happy days with many happy memories with family and friends who would visit.
Many trips were taken on their bicycles. France down the Loire River, Germany in the Mosel River region, cycling through vineyards on bike paths, Ireland for a month on little back roads. The fall color in New England, the Natchez Trace Parkway from Nashville, Tennessee to Natchez, Mississippi. And of course, all over our Skagit Valley and up to Bellingham on the Chuckanut.
Roger is survived by Nancy, and his son David and daughter Karen, three grandchildren: Senna, Corbin and Gavin who live in California.
The family wants to sincerely thank Rosario Assisted Living and Hospice of the Northwest for their compassionate care of Roger. In lieu of flowers, Nancy asks that you make a donation to the Kiwanis Foundation in Roger's memory. At his request, there will be no memorial service. However, we will raise a glass to Roger at an appropriate Merry Monday gathering. Bon voyage, Roger. Your wit, humor and generosity will be missed.
