David Macpherson Obituary
DANVILLE, Va. - David Joseph Macpherson, age 55, of 135 Hawthorne Drive, died Friday, Oct. 28, 2005, from injuries received in an automobile race in Concord, New Hampshire.He was born in Dayton, Ohio, on Jan. 6, 1950, a son of David Arthur Macpherson and Margaret Lee Macpherson.
On March 3, 1984, he married Mary Ann "Tuss" Lenander Macpherson, who survives of the home.
Dave was educated in the Des Moines, Iowa, school system and attended Mankato State University in Minnesota.
He came to Danville in 1989 and was associated with the Daniel Group. He later was involved in commercial real estate and at the time of his death was president of Macpherson & Co., Inc.
During his 34-year career, Dave developed surrounding commercial real estate and economic development, representing many local, regional and national clients in their business expansions and disposition of various facilities. He was active in brokerage as well as the development of new investments and redevelopment of older real estate opportunities.
Dave served on numerous local and statewide committees; the Danville Development Council, Dan River Business Development Center and The Key to Danville Foundation, the City of Danville Board of Zoning Appeals, the City of Danville Board of Building Code of Appeals, the Dan River Small Business Development Center, the Virginia Association of Realtors Commercial Council and International Committee.
He was a past board member of the Virginia Association of Realtors, past Chairman of the Southern Virginia Economic Development Partnership, past Chairman of the Dan River Region Association of Realtors, past Chairman of the Danville Chamber of Commerce, past District Chairman and State Council Member of the Virginia Ducks Unlimited and had held numerous positions with many civic organizations including the Danville YMCA, Riverview Rotary, The Free Clinic of Danville and Leadership Southside.
He was an active member of Episcopal Church of the Epiphany and served on the vestry. He was a member of the Danville Golf Club, the Young Mens Club, Treasurer of the German Club, member of the Virginia International Raceway, First Tee of Danville, and continued to be active in the Danville-Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce. He served in the Iowa State National Guard.
Dave is survived by his wife, Tuss MacPherson, of the home; a son, John Golinvaux, and his wife, Theresa, of Leesburg, Va.; two sisters, Kyle Wallace, and her daughter and son, Cameron and Ian, of Cary, N.C., and Kathy Macpherson of Eugene, Ore.; two brothers, Sean Macpherson and his wife, Sara, and their daughter, Page, of Redding, Conn., and Mark Macpherson and his wife, Kim, and their sons, Aidan and Elliott, of Apex, N.C.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 2, 2005, at 4 p.m. at Episcopal Church of the Epiphany with the Rev. Charles Riddle and the Rev. James Mathieson officiating.
The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 1, 2005, from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. and from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times will be at the residence, 135 Hawthorne Drive.
The family suggests that memorial gifts may be sent to the Danville Humane Society, P.O. Box 3352, Danville, VA 24543 or to First Tee, 135 Jones Crossing, Danville, VA 24541.
Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Friday was my first track event. I don't know David personally, but I stayed that day to watch the race. I will never forget that day. I want to let you know how sorry I am for your loss. I didn't know Dave personally but I was at NHIS in NH on Saturday and it was a very difficult and emotional day for everyone in attendence. There was a very moving tribute to Dave before the Club Race when all of the racers did a reverse parade lap to honor his memory. I don't think there was a dry eye at the track. We all enjoy driving and racing because it is fun and there is a lot of comraderie at the track. Dave's tragic accident reminded all of us that it is also dangerous. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.

Dave was great at what he did on and off the track. In the past year I have been able to spend more time with Dave while at BMW Club events at VIR. Dave was always willing to offer his input to help me improve as a "new" driver. The BMW CCA will miss Dave at the track, and the community will miss his leadership for years to come. Although his impact on the community will live on for generations.
My prayers are with all of Dave's family; both immediate and the large extended family he created through doing what he loved at the track!

I'm very saddened by your loss and wanted to pass on my sincerest condolences. I got to know Dave well in 2004 while racing with the BMW Club in the Southeast. Dave and I were class rivals on track, in a championship that came down to the wire. He was a tenacious competitor, but he was the first one to congratulate me if I beat him. I spent an afternoon talking with him at VIR this spring and enjoyed our conversation immensely, where I got some insight into him as a person and not just the guy in the car I was chasing out on track. I'll miss seeing him at the races and will think about him always when I strap on a helmet to do what we all love.

Dave was the best! He wore who he was on his sleeve, and for that he was loved. He was a fortunate man to have as strong a woman as Tuss with him in life. We can take solace in knowing he was taken doing something he loved to do, and for that we can be thankful. I am a lucky person to have had Pit Bull as a friend. I remember Dave as one who was always smiling. He approached life with a sense of can-do optimism which was infectious to all. His accomplishments during his lifetime will only be equalled by those that he will achieve in his next estate. Tuss, I first meet Dave while on the VAR Policy Board. Dave drove a group of us back from a dinner my first year on the board. We got lost and 2 hours later we arrived back at the hotel. I am sure he told you about the trip back. After that the group always talks about the time we got loss with Dave as our driver. He became my friend at that time and I will miss seeing him at VAR.

Dora, Madeline and I are filled with the deepest sorrow over the loss of Dave. I will never forget young Maddy asking, "Is Mr. Pit Bull going to be there?" before a race weekend. Or when Dave suggested that perhaps we give Maddy an apple to keep her mouth busy after the barrage of questions only a 5 year-old could deliver. I laugh out loud thinking about that!
We are crushed, but also honored to have known Dave. He taught me a lot both on and off the racetrack. I know he will be routing for and watching over all of his fellow racers, friends and family from the heavens. To say he will be missed is an understatement.

I was saddened to read of Dave's untimely passing this morning. In my job capacity with the City of Danville, I had many occasions to speak with Dave either by phone or to sit in meetings with him.
I found him to be a gracious gentlemen, one who served City Council and the citizens of Danville any time he was asked to do so.
