Hugh Irvin Mitchell Jr., 83, of 280 Parker Road West went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 14, 2019, at his residence after a brief decline in health. Hugh was born in Danville, Va., on June 8, 1936, a son of the late Hugh "Major" I. Mitchell Sr. and Virginia Bethel Staples Mitchell. Hugh served in the U.S. Navy during the Persian Gulf War. He retired from the Navy Reserves. He worked for Dan River Inc. where he was a mechanic. He was a faithful member of Holland Road Baptist Church where he sung in the choir and was an usher. He was a member of American Legion Dan River Post # 1097. On November 25, 1971, he married Faye Mills Mitchell, who survives of the residence. Survivors also include his daughter, Teresa Horne Cannon; a brother, Roger Lee Mitchell and wife, Jane; two grandsons, Chad Horne and wife, Melissa, Tyler Scott Cannon; two great-grandchildren, Braylen and Aubrey Horne; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, a brother, Douglas Wayne Mitchell, predeceased him. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 16, 2019, at 2 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel conducted by the Rev. James Mays. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends on Sunday evening from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at the residence at other times. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to The Gideons International or to Project Nehemiah at P.O. Box 777, Hixson, TN 37343.
