John P. "Jack" BarnettJohn P. "Jack" Barnett died Thursday, October 23, 2014, at Westminster Canterbury of Lynchburg.Born on April 29, 1937, in Danville, Va., he was a son of the late Ewen P. Barnett and Lois Pruitt Barnett. In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by a brother, E. P Barnett Jr.He was a lifelong Danville resident, a graduate of George Washington High School and Virginia Military Institute. He lettered in football, basketball, tennis and golf in high school and college. He served as an officer in the U.S. Army at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He then went on to earn his Law and Master of Business Administration degrees from the University of Virginia. From then on he was an avid supporter and fan of the University of Virginia sports.He opened and managed the brokerage office of J. C. Bradford & Co. in Danville, then acquired and operated the textile manufacturer Durham Hosiery Mills, Inc. for many years. He had recently relocated to the Westminster Canterbury retirement community in Lynchburg, Va.He is survived by his only son, John Anderson Barnett of Washington, D.C.A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, October 28, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Highland Burial Park with the Reverend Kristie Miles officiating.Townes Funeral Home is serving the Barnett family.
