Margaret Dallas Obituary

ROXBORO, N.C. - Margaret Vaden Dallas died on December 7, 2004 at Person Memorial Hospital, where she had been hospitalized for the past four weeks. She was 90 years old.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 9, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Roxboro Presbyterian Church, where she was a member for over 50 years. The Rev. Ed Donnell will conduct the services. Visitation will be held 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Brooks & White Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Nancy and Jimmy Dallas, 239 Crestwood Drive, Roxboro.

Mrs. Dallas was born on August 16, 1913 to Luther Peyton and Effie Eppes Hailey Vaden in Pittsylvania County, Va. One of the family's four children, she grew up in Keysville, Va., graduating from Keysville High School and attending Harrisonburg State Teachers' College, where she graduated in 1935 with a degree in home economics.

She married Garland Sanford Dallas of Spring Garden, Va. in July of 1940. He preceded her in death in 1992.

Mrs. Dallas is survived by three sons, G. Sanford Dallas of Richmond, Va., James Edward Dallas and wife Nancy and William Vaden Dallas and wife Marilyn, all of Roxboro. She is also survived by four grandchildren, James Edward Dallas Jr., Kim Dallas Busby, William Vaden Dallas Jr. and Maxwell Vaden Dallas; and one great-grandchild, Coleman James Dallas.

In addition to her family, Mrs. Dallas had a variety of other work experiences during her adult life. Upon graduating from college, she taught at Dan River High School in Pittsylvania County, Va. for two years and was then appointed county home demonstration agent in Allegany County, Va. While serving as home demonstration agent, she gained state-wide recognition for a 4-H project that encouraged young people to acquire and raise poultry. After her marriage, she worked with her husband in the retail shoe business. She and Mr. Dallas moved to Roxboro in 1953 and established The Bootery, which is still operated by family members.

She was a long-time resident of Roxboro and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She will be remembered for her love of home and family, her quiet determination, and her graceful countenance.

Memorials may be made to Roxboro Presbyterian Church Building fund, P.O. Box 419, Roxboro, NC 27573.

Sandy, Jimmy & Bill...I can remember our family get-togethers each Christmas when we would go to Grandma Kate & Poppa's home. Time went by, we grew up and traditions changed. Even though we rarely see each other, we will always have our childhood memories of the fun times. I will always remember with fondness both Uncle Garland & Aunt Margaret......Ellen

Margaret was a gracious, lovely person. I'm sad for you but happy for Margaret for she is at peace. Your fond memories that you can share with each other will help in her absence. Sandy, Jim, and Bill - you have shared a wonderful Mother. Her strengths will continue through you to the grandchildren. God bless!

To Mrs. Dallas' Family; I would like to extend my sincerest heartfelt condolences for your loss. I had met Mr. and Mrs. Dallas many years ago while nursing at Roman Eagle Memorial Home and caring for Garlands mother, Kate and for Mrs. Dallas' mother, Mrs. Vaden. Kate was my friend and I loved her, so I had been able to strike up a relationship of sorts with Mrs. Dallas. She was as kind and caring a woman you could ever hope to meet, and was as attentive to Kate as she was to her own mother. That in itself exhibits character. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. God bless you all. Billie Wyatt, RN, BSN
