Guy Antley
Edwardsville - The strong and steady backbeat of our lives, Guy Antley, age 71, died on December 8, 2025 at Select Specialty Hospital in St. Charles, Missouri. Paralyzed from the waist down after a hospital procedure in July, he spent the next four and a half months meeting one unimaginable physical challenge after another with the same resolve and positive attitude he shared with everyone he knew.
Guy was born to Marcia and Gene Antley on January 5, 1954 in Oxnard, California. He overcame serious childhood illnesses to develop into an accomplished swimmer and water polo goalie both at El Dorado High School in Placentia, California and the University of California at Irvine. While completing his history degree, his water polo skills earned him accolades as NCAA All-American, member of the U.S. National and World Championship Teams, silver medalist in the 1975 Pan-American Games, and member of the 1976 U.S. Olympic team that missed competing in Montreal by one goal.
He married Cindy, his beloved wife of 47 years, in 1978 and became a stepdad to Brad and Chad Martens. He and Cindy welcomed their daughter Shauna that same year. Guy lived and worked in Placentia, California until 2008 when he and Cindy moved to Edwardsville, Illinois to be closer to family there. He continued working as a regional sales manager for a semiconductor manufacturer until retirement in 2019.
Guy's warmth, humor, integrity, and deep kindness endeared him to people wherever he went: the children and high-schoolers he coached, the seniors whose meals he delivered and whose stories he cherished, the visitors to the Lewis and Clark Museum, the countless children on the soccer field and volleyball court whose teams he and Cindy supported, and the friends at McBible Study, just to name a few.
We especially remember Guy for his work behind the drum kit. Whether a member of FredEx (Roger Daltrey's Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp Band), the Robert Perry Band, or Rum Boogie, he kept us all rocking in the free world whenever he could.
Preceding him in death are his brother Rick Antley and his father Gene Antley. Missing and loving him forever are his family: his wife Cindy; their children Brad Martens (and wife Beth), Chad Martens, and Shauna Pellauer (and husband Michael); their grandchildren Claire Martens, Dylan Martens, and Sadie Pellauer; their godchildren Christopher McGlothlin, Kelly McKeever, and Erin McKeever; his sister Sandy (and husband Dave McGlothlin); and his mother Marcia. He loved being our Guido, Dove, Dad, Guybo, Guyfather, Uncle Guy, and Papa, and we will honor his life in all of its fullness with a memorial service on Saturday, March 7 at 11 am at St. John's United Methodist Church, 7372 Marine Road, Edwardsville, IL, 62025. A reception will immediately follow the service where the family would like to continue celebrating Guy's life. The family suggest memorials to the Edwardsville High School Marching Band or the Chuck Fruit Aquatic Center.
Our time with him would never be long enough and still we give thanks that, in the words of The Who, one of Guy's favorite bands, we were blessed to be with him as he sang (and drummed) his life's song "to the wide open spaces…to the infinite sea…to the sky-high mountains, to the free, to the free."
