Edwardsville - Jarrell Rodney "Rod" Spears, age 76, of Edwardsville, IL, passed away on Monday, April 8, 2024, at Aspen Creek of Troy, in Troy, IL. He was born March 5, 1948, in Corpus Christi, TX, the son of the late V.J. & Joy (Wilkes) Spears. Rod is survived by his wife of 49 years, Martha (Gore) Spears, whom he married on February 14, 1975, in El Paso, TX. He is also survived by one son, Brad Spears & wife, Karen, who are currently stationed at Holloman Air Force Base in Alamogordo, NM; daughter, Mandy Suhre & husband Mike of Edwardsville; seven grandchildren, Sean Spears of Columbus, OH, Jake, Emily & Tommy Spears of Holloman AFB, NM, Drew, Ryan & Ally Suhre of Edwardsville; & one brother, Stephen Wayne Spears and wife, Nancy, of Oviedo, FL. Rod received a Master's Degree in Business Administration from Trinity University in San Antonio, TX. He spent 20 years in the U.S. Army and retired as a Lt. Colonel. Following his retirement, he worked as a financial planner but ended up in the golf industry in Denver, CO where he was the Tournament Director for the Colorado Section of the PGA. He and Marty moved to Madison County in April 2008 to live near their daughter, son-in-law, & grandchildren. Rod's favorite pastime was playing golf. He & his wife lived on Oak Brook Golf Course where you could find him almost every day unless he was working on his meticulous lawn at home. He will be cremated according to his wishes and a graveside service will be held at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis on Thursday, April 18, 2024, at 1:00 pm and will be open to the public. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the American Diabetes Association or Alzheimer's Association Weber & Rodney Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
