VIRGINIA COUEY Obituary

Virginia C. Couey, 99, longtime resident of San Angelo, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, in an El Campo, Texas, hospital. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens with Ron Laughlin officiating. Virginia was born May 15, 1902, to Nathanial and Claudia Ann Roberts Ross in Ste-phenville, Texas. She married Marvin Layne Couey on Dec. 25, 1919, in Fort Worth. He preceded her in death in 1988. Virginia's family moved to San Angelo in 1934, where they lived until three years ago. She and her husband owned and operated ranch and oil properties in Glasscock County and other West Texas areas. She was a longtime member of the Baptist Church and was involved in a number of local activities. Her recent activities were gardening, bridge and golf, which she enjoyed until age 93. She is survived by her children, Martha Layne Givens and husband, Clarence Jr., of Pagosa Springs, Colo., and Ross H. Couey and wife, Catherine, of El Campo. She is also survived by five grandsons, Layne Givens of Houston, Joel Givens of Horseshoe Bay and Blair, Chris and Gerry Couey, all of El Campo; eleven great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; two nieces; and three nephews.
