John Ben Schlittler

John Ben Schlittler, 89, passed away Friday, Aug. 12 in Abilene. Graveside funeral was at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14 at Oak Grove Cemetery in Graham. Arrangements were under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home.John was born Feb. 23, 1933, on the banks of the Brazos River in Palo Pinto County.He grew up on the family farm in Flint Creek Community in Young County. John graduated from Graham High School in 1950. He graduated from Texas Tech University where he was President of the Texas Tech University Rodeo Club. He served his country for two years in the U.S. Army at Fort Bliss from 1952-1954. After graduation he became County Agent of Floyd County, then began his teaching career in Leakey, Texas. From there he went to Honduras where he was in charge the college Agriculture Department then he went back to Rising Star and began his life long dream in the ranching business where he managed several large ranches in that area. Twenty-five years ago he became involved in the asbestos removal business where he formed his own company and worked until his death.Survivors include children; Steve Schlittler of San Angelo, Jon Pat Schlittler of New Mexico, Staci Winfrey of Brownwood, and Lissa Robertson of Cross Plains; siblings, Willard Schlittler and wife LaDonna of Bryson, Betty Frazier of McKinney, Gwen Dyrud of Laurel, Md., Marlene Champion and husband Richard of Fort Worth, Maxine Tucker and husband Charles of Azle; numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.John was preceded in death by his parents, Ward Schlittler and Elmina Caudill Schlittler-Cox, step-father Malcolm Cox, son David Schlittler, daughter Robin, wife Clara, sister Oleta Roark, brother-in-laws, Wayne Roark, Wally Frazier and Chet Dyrud.Memorials may be made to your favorite charity.
