Send FlowersEdward Armour Rice, age 88, passed away on Monday, November 24, 2025.
Before Alzheimer's disease took his memory, Ed, or "Bud" to many longtime friends, was a jovial, friendly, kind, and loving husband, father, and friend. He was always active, filling his time by walking, golfing, skiing, bowling, drawing, watching all kinds of sports, and dancing at the Viking Lodge.
He was an avid reader, especially about history. Ed loved a piping hot cup of black coffee, or a cold beer, and enjoyed retired life by puttering around his yard, and caring for his dogs.
Bud grew up on the N.E. side of Grand Rapids. As a student at Creston High School, he loved sports, playing football, basketball, and baseball. When he was a young man, he lost his father in a plane crash. Bud went on to graduate from Central Michigan University.
Job changes brought him and his family to both Bay City and Cheboygan before returning to live in the Grand Haven/Spring Lake area. He worked in the insurance industry for many years until retirement. He loved his family and was a supportive husband, father, and grandfather. Even with his failed memory, he always brightened when seeing family and regularly told them he loved them.
He is preceded in death by his father Armour Rice, his mother Dorla Cuddington, siblings Donna Osbon, Robert Rice, and Randy Rice, as well as father figure/friend Joe Nelson. He is survived by his wife Jamie Rice, brother Butch (Pam) Rice, daughters Renee Koeller and Chris (David) Greco, as well as grandchildren Zach (Audra) Koeller, Nick Koeller, Sam (Olivia) Greco, Rosemary Greco, and great-grandson Everett Koeller.
A Celebration of Ed's Life will be held 11 a.m. Monday, December 15, 2025, at The Lee Chapel of Sytsema Funeral and Cremation Services, 6291 S. Harvey St., Norton Shores, MI 49444 (231) 798-1100. Visitation with the family will take place one hour prior to the service.
