Roy Elden Closs, Jr., age 90, of Grand Haven, went to his Heavenly home on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at Robbinswood Assisted Living.
He was born on November 27, 1934, in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, to the late Roy Elden and Barbara (Smith) Closs, Sr. Roy married his high school sweetheart, Betty Ogle, on December 4, 1954. Roy graduated from high school and went on to work as a Merchant Marine Chief Engineer working for the U of M on their research vessel, and then on Great Lakes shipping freighters for almost 40 years.
He and Betty were lifelong members of Grand Haven Community Baptist Church. Roy enjoyed Amateur HAM Radio, and he belonged to the NOARC Radio Club. He also enjoyed putting together R/C Model Airplanes, and in his younger years, going camping with Betty.
Roy will be forever remembered and missed by his beloved wife of 70 years, Betty Closs; his daughter, Denise Swanson; sons, Roy (Susan) Closs, III, and Andrew Closs; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Linda Closs; son-in-law, Robert Swanson; and his sisters, Diane Sessoms and Barbara Bastin.
The Funeral Service for Roy will take place at noon on Monday, January 20, 2025, at Klaassen Family Funeral Home, with Pastor Don McGee officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be at Grand Haven Township Lakeshore Cemetery.
