Gordon "Gordy" Lee Herrgard, age 76, of Deer River, Minnesota, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, March 8, 2026.

Gordy was born March 11, 1949, in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, to August and Jane Herrgard. He attended Deer River High School and, following graduation, enlisted in the United States Army, where he proudly served for three years.

After his honorable discharge, Gordy returned home and began a long career with the United States Postal Service. He served as the Postmaster in Deer River for 20 years and was well known throughout the community through his work at the post office. Following his retirement from the USPS, his strong work ethic kept him active. He spent time working and volunteering at Custer State Park in South Dakota, where he enjoyed seeing the buffalo each day and exploring the Black Hills hiking and motorcycling. Later, he worked seasonally for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Department.

Gordy was an avid motorcyclist who loved traveling throughout the United States and Canada. He enjoyed long drives and spending time outdoors. Few people knew the Deer River area as well as he did, including all the spots to pick high-bush cranberries, which he turned into the best homemade wine.

Gordy was also a passionate hunter who enjoyed pursuing elk, bear, and deer and spending time in the woods with family and friends.

A pillar of the community, Gordy dedicated many years of service volunteering with the Deer River Lions and the American Legion Post 122. He was also an active member of Deer River VFW Post 2720 and served with the Deer River Honor Guard.

Gordy shared a deep and lasting love with Karen. The two happily lived together for 17 years before marrying on April 20, 2002.

He was preceded in death by his parents, August and Jane Herrgard, and his sisters, Sharon and Darla.

Gordy is survived by his beloved wife, Karen, and his son, Dasithe "Dusty" (Kari) Cartie, sister Jane Skelly, and brothers Ed Herrgard and Kenny Herrgard.
