Steven John O'Fallon
1956 - 2025
Steven John O'Fallon passed peacefully at home on Thursday, November 6, 2025. Steve was born to the late Thomas and Marlys O'Fallon on February 17, 1956, in
Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1964, Steve's parents moved their family to Hill City to build Quadna Mountain Lodge and develop a year-round resort. While growing up in Hill City, Steve played football, basketball, and baseball, along with working in various capacities at the resort.
In 1975, Steve attended the University of St. Thomas, where he played football prior to beginning work with the Kahler Hospitality Group in Minneapolis. He moved with the Kahler Company to their hotel in Albert Lea and was then relocated to Fort Worth, Texas, in 1979. In Fort Worth, he worked at the Kahler Green Oaks Inn and at West Branch. While working at the Kahler Green Oaks Inn, he met his future grandfather-in-law and bride. Barbara and Steve married on July 11, 1981, and not too long after, they moved to Rochester, Minnesota, where Steve ran the Greenhouse at the Kahler Hotel. They started their family in Minnesota, first with Sean in 1984 and then with Kelly in 1985. In January of 1986, Steve was offered the opportunity to become the on-site manager to oversee the restoration of the historic San Marcos Resort in Chandler, Arizona. This was the first grass links course built in Arizona (1912), and due to hardships, it was shuttered from 1979-1986. With Steve's direction, the original building was restored, and another 250 rooms were added. He then started on resurrecting the golf course as the Superintendent and eventually added the Engineering title to his accomplishments. In 1988, they welcomed Ryan to the family. After almost 25 years at San Marcos, Steve started his own contracting/handyman business. Years later, even after hanging up his hammer, he was still helping people out. He was always available to lend a hand, offer a quick word of advice, wish: "Top of the morning to ya", or put a smile on your face with his humor. Steve loved watching sports, car shows, action movies and music. Although he lived in Arizona longer than he lived in Minnesota, his loyalty remained with his Minnesota teams. But if you truly wanted to see his face light up, have one of his grandkids enter the room.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Marlys O'Fallon; wife, Barbara; brother, Paul; and father-in-law, Marvin. He is survived by his children, Sean (Christine), Kelly (Zach) Rush, and Ryan (Amanda); grandchildren, Logan, Emmylyn, Adalynn, Cooper, Wade, Rory, and a baby girl due in May, 2026; siblings, Diane (Ron) Schaefer, Tom (Pat), Pete, Deb (Mark McBride), David (Sandy), Mary, and Ann; mother-in-law Connie Brynterson and sister-in-law Theresa (Buddy) Wiley; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. A Minnesota Celebration of Life will be held for Steve on Sunday, July 5, 2026, from 2pm-4pm at Harry's Bar and Grill in Hill City.
