Claire Del Guerra Obituary

Claire M. (Vangelisti) Del Guerra, 87, of Great Falls died of natural causes Monday, Sept. 17, at her home.

A vigil service is 7 p.m. today at O'Connor Memorial Chapel. Funeral liturgy is 1 p.m. Thursday at Corpus Christi Catholic Church (formerly St. Luke's Catholic Church). O'Connor Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Claire was born on May 19, 1925, the eldest child of Dante and Yolanda Vangelisti. Claire grew up in Black Eagle, attending Collins School and St. Mary's High School.

Her father instilled in her a lifelong love of learning, encouraging her to attend college so that she would have a profession. Claire attended the College of Great Falls and attained a certificate to teach. She set out and began teaching grades one through six in a one-room school house in Calvert and later in the two-room Manchester School. Claire returned to college in 1948, earning a degree in elementary education, and in 1950 earned a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics from Montana State University. Upon graduation, she was offered a job as an extension agent in Hill County, a position that she held for five years. She earned a Master of Science degree in home economics in 1972 and was honored by receiving the distinction of Professor Emeritus in Family and Consumer Sciences in 2004.

She married Serafino Del Guerra in September 1955, and settled into life as a wife and homemaker. During this time, she gave birth to her son, Tony, and daughter, Dana. Serafino died unexpectedly in an industrial accident in 1963. After his death, Claire again returned to college, this time earning a degree in secondary education. She was then employed as a teacher at Saints Peter and Paul and Central Catholic High School.

In 1970, she began her career as an extension agent with Cascade County, a position she held until her reluctant retirement in June 2006. Passionate about education, learning began as soon as she entered a room and did not stop until she left. Claire cared deeply about the people she served, and by the end of her career there were few people whose life she had not touched in one way or another. Her tireless work ethic and pride in a job well done was passed on to both her son and daughter. Claire was very involved in the Extension Homemakers Organization and developed many lifelong friendships through this. Many also remember Claire as a fixture each summer at the Montana State Fair in the 4-H or Family Living Buildings, where she spent 61 summers. There were few more special times to her than fair week. She served as a 4-H Superintendent, as well as a judge for foods and food competitions.

A longtime community advocate, Claire served on over 60 boards throughout Great Falls and the surrounding area. Claire often said, "The sky's the limit in what you can achieve when you empower people to improve their lives." Claire was one of the founding members of the Grandparents Raising Grandkids Organization. In addition, some of Claire's most important work was in the area of mental health. She was a founding member of the Cascade County Mental Health Association and played an active role on the committee for the annual Beautiful Minds Walk. When anyone needed help or a donation, Claire was often their first call, and she was always at the ready with a list of people to mobilize. She often said her work kept her young, and she remained involved on several boards and organizations until her death.

Never one to want to stand in the spotlight, she nonetheless received several awards for her many achievements during her storied career, including the Distinguished Service Award for Montana from the National Home Economics Association (1976), Mother of the Year (1980), the Arrowhead Award (1984), the Silver Apple Award given by the Great Falls Education Association (1985), the Soroptimist Woman of Distinction for the North West Region (1985), the Jefferson Award from Governor Ted Schwinden (1986), the Continued Excellence Award from the National Association of Extension Home Economics (1986), the Virginia Blend Award (1987), Great Falls Business and Professional Women's Woman of Achievement Award (1986), the Cascade County Mental Health Association Award (1987), the YWCA Salute to Women Award in Health Education for the development of the annual Great Falls Health Fair and the Heritage Preservation Award from the Cascade County Historical Society (2007).

Claire grew up surrounded by love, family and food in a home where the door was always open and food was plentiful. Proud of her Italian-American heritage, she instilled in her immediate and extended family the time honored traditions of Italian cooking. We were always met with the smell of homemade ravioli and other Italian specialties for family celebrations. She imparted in her children so many valuable life lessons and always led by example. Claire was extremely proud of her granddaughters and shared a unique bond with them. Spring break, weeks in the summer and any other moments they could arrange were spent together. Claire always met them at their level, playing games, reading, laughing and instilling in them self confidence and a belief that there is no dream too large for them to achieve. Most importantly she listened to them.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Serafino; father Dante; mother Yolanda; brother David Vangelisti; and sister Eileen Strizich.

She is survived by her son, Tony, and his wife, Laura of Missoula; daughter, Dana, and her partner, Ron Klassen of Great Falls; grandchildren Madeline and Olivia of Missoula; sister-in-law Katherine Niccolucci of Missoula; nieces Teresa Strizich, Katie Salyards, Margaret Brown, Andrea Strizich, Gemma Strizich, Anita Day, Claire Vangelisiti and Serena Halvorson; and nephews John Strizich, Greg Strizich, Tom Strizich, Albert Niccolucci and Mike Niccolucci..

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts in Claire's name be directed to the Montana State University Alumni Foundation 1501 S. 11th Ave., P.O. Box 172750 Bozeman, MT 59717 or the Center for Mental Health Foundation, 915 1st Ave South, Great Falls, MT 59403.

The Cascade County Extension Office will close at noon on Thursday in honor of Claire's service to Cascade County.

I am sorry for your loss. As most of the other people I was in 4-H. Your mother was amazing and always ready to help.

Dear Claire's family,
She was such an inspirtion to our daughter Karol in 4-H and encouraged her to persue a career using her cooking skills. Dear Claire always had a tip or two to tell to make cooking a delight. We always looked forward to her coming to the Stanford Fair and not only judging but having interviews with our 4-Hers. Had not seen her for quite a few years but would read about her at times and remember our good times. Know you will all miss her but she "taught" you so much and you will be able to continue her ways of helping others. Sincere Sympathy from Mae Rosman and family

Dana & Tony, My prayers are with you. Your mother was a delight. I used to visit her when Trudy Stimac was doing her hair and she had the most wonderful stories of what she was doing then. I truly enjoyed her spirit. God bless you both during this hard time.

Claire was my first interview, even before I was a cub reporter. I interviewed her about one of the food programs she created for the Cascade County Extension Service. As usual, she was gracious and helpful. Even after that one interview, she always remembered me whenever we ran into one another around town. She was a very special lady and leader in Great Falls; I hope the community creates several scholarships and awards in her name, although her integrity, friendliness and longevity will be hard to live up to. My sincere condolences to her family and friends.

What a lady. Back in the day no State Fair story on radio or TV was complete until a refernce had been made, or a quote included from either Joe Foss or Claire. I can't imagine how many lives her sincere interest and enthusiasm touched. One of my great memories of life in Montana will always be having had tthe privilege of sharing part of my time with Claire. She was one of a kind...one of a kind. Wouldn't the world be a better place with more like her?

Claire was so wonderful! I met her when I interviewed for a position in Cascade County 37 years ago. But, I went to Hill County and spent 4 wonderful years there. Claire would come up and we all loved her as a judge because she would explain the reasons for her decisions in the most delightful way so that no one would take offense! I truly always wanted to be like her and sadly haven't seen her since I left Hill County in 1979.
Today, I work at Penn State University with 4-H young people and volunteer leaders. But, her influence on me and my career has been great. My love is sent to all who had the great priviledge of knowing her. Jan Scholl

Claire made so many positive contributions to this world. She was a mentor in the 4-H program, and her efforts will be remembered by so many people. She was also willing to go the extra mile. One example of this was when she drove to Highwood to help me with a second grade classroom project. She will be missed, but fondly remembered.

A great light has gone out of our world, with the passing of dear and shining Claire Del Guerra. And we shall walk in more dimness except for the memories of her many good works and sparkling personality. My condolences to Claire's wonderful family as they will miss her the most, having benefitted the most from having her as mother and grandmother. The rest of us, whose lives she touched in so many influential ways, will trudge on and hope we can share some of her influence with those we meet along our way and give dear Claire due credit. Among other associations, I had the unusual privilege of working daily with Claire during five State Fair weeks in the 1970s and she surely kept me hopping and doing much the running she could not manage herself in order to get done what she knew had to be done...and there were several of us Cascade County 4-H kids who tried to keep up with her. I am not sure we met with her expectations, but she was always kind about it and let us come back and enjoy her association as we spun around in the 4-H building and across the fairgrounds. And so it was, I expect, with many of her associates in her many pursuits. I shall be expecting to greet her again beyond the veil of this mortal existence in the eternities as I'm sure she will be getting around with her bright beacon, the great light of her indomitable spirit. Shine on, Claire, and thanks for lighting the way ahead of us!

Dear Tony and Dana, I grew up with you and your Mom and the sad time of losing your Dad as if it were yesterday. The Sunday drives your Mom took us on meant so much. She opened her home to me and other kids so willingly as well as your grandmothers home with the pasta hanging in the basement. I remember your Mom always having Chips Ahoy cookies and Hi-C ready for snacks and then spraying Lysol we all giggled at. You had such a kind caring loving Mom who was so proud of all you ever did. I always admired her strength after your Dad died to go on and care for you both so much. I'm so glad she was able to enjoy all of you for so long. I will forever think of her fondly.

Our sincere sympathy goes out to your family. Claire was a wonderful woman and mentor to everyone she came into contact with. I met her thru Ext.Homemakers when I was a young mother and what great learning experiences our Club had with your mom's leadership. She touched so many and will be missed by everyone. She had quite the contact list, when she took on a new endeavor she knew just who to call, and who could or would say no to Claire? Thank you for sharing her with us. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. And the sky is the limit!

It has been 40 years since I have entered 4-H items at the fair, but Claire still remains in my memories. She was such an inspiring role model and loved teaching and helping. She always had a smile on her face and was someone that you could visit with, no matter what your age. She touched so many lives. May the love of God, family and friends support you during this difficult time.

Dear FAmily,
The Vangelisit's were such an important part of my life. I loved Dan Vangelisti he taught me all I know about gardening as I followed him all around Smelter Hill as a child. Claire was our 4-H leader for the 10 years I was in 4-H. She taught me all I know about sewing and baking, gave me the confidence to make anything or mend anything that came along. To this day my family has a sewing project for me. Dave was in the choir with us and when my Uncle came to visit he would spend his lunch hour singing as my Uncle played. Eileen was a year a heard of me in school, but Lorraine Betty Jane and I spent out week-ends hanging out together. Wonderful family and I have thought about them a lot thru the years. Dear Dana and family. I am so sorry to hear about your mom. What a wonderful and beautiful soul. The last time I saw her, she was of course volunteering, it was at the Blue Grass on the Bay. She was her wonderful self, selfless is the right word.
I am sorry I am unable to make the services as I am out of town, as are my parents Bill and Pia Schermele. I am sure they will be in contact when they return. In our thoughts and prayers, and may all of the memories keep you warm and comfortable.

It is with a heavy heart we send condolences to the entire Del Guerra extended family. Claire's legacy will never, ever be forgotten. May our sorrow soon be replaced by only happy memories of Claire, a pioneer of community mental health.

So sorry for the loss of your mother and grandmother. I fondly remember Claire through 4-H. I spent many enjoyable times with her at 4-H camp. She always was one to ask about your family and how you were doing. Her strength and determination to carry on while being a single mother helped me through dealing with it on my level. To say she was an inspiration would be putting it lightly. Be proud of your mother and everything she did. She was a wonderful person. Linda (Dawson) Sederholm

Dana and family,
It was such a joy to know your Mom. Amongst all her gifts that she shared I was most touched by her never ending volunteerism. Working with her on the Mental Health Association of Great Falls Board of Directors she never failed to jump in with enthusiasm and take on a job that needed to be done. I just don't know how she was able to do all that she did. She was a true gift to the Great Falls community and she will be dearly missed.
In this time of sorrow for the loss of your Mother remember that she lived her life to the fullest and left the example to this community of how to share, love and give back to all the people she cared so much for, even if she had never met them.
Take care,
Deb Oleynik, ND
