Glenn Lockwood Obituary

Navy veteran Glenn Lockwood, 81, of 601 26th Ave. N.E., a radio and television broadcaster for more than 40 years and one of the first staffers of local station KRTV, died Thursday of complications from a stroke at Peace Hospice.
A celebration of his life is 1 p.m. Sunday at the home of his nephew and his wife, Jerry and Debbie Hunter, 1014 Valley View Drive. Cremation has taken place and interment will be in Hillcrest Mau-soleum under the direction of Schnider Funeral Home.
Mr. Lockwood is survived by his wife of 41 years, Billie Lockwood of Great Falls; three sons, Verne of Granite Falls, Wash., Chris of Mesa, Ariz., and Mike of Moreno Valley, Calif.; a daughter, Cori of Great Falls; a brother, Charles of Newberry Springs, Calif.; a sister, Nina Hunter of Great Falls and two grandchildren.
Born in Denver, Mr. Lockwood moved to Montana as a child. He lived in Lewistown, Cascade and Glasgow, where his father worked for the railroad.
The family came to Great Falls in 1938. After graduating from Great Falls High School in 1943, he entered the Navy, where he trained in electronics and electrical engi-neering.
Mr. Lockwood studied radio and television arts at the Don Martin School in Hollywood and went to work for a Los Angeles FM radio station in 1949. By 1958, he had worked in television at KOOK-TV in Billings and KSHO-TV in Las Vegas for about a year and a half, and had eight years experience in radio.
From 1958 to 1990 he worked at KRTV in Great Falls. Mr. Lockwood was one of the original staff who helped owner Dan Snyder get the station on the air. Among his many jobs at KRTV, both in front of, and behind the camera, were sales, announcing, production, engi-neering, copy writing, switching, operations director, assistant man-ager, budgeting, shipping and personnel. His last title was opera-tions/programming.
In an interview at the time of his retirement in 1990, Mr. Lockwood said, "We didn't used to pay atten-tion to titles. We saw what work needed to be done and we pitched in and did it."
Mr. Lockwood served as co-host and reported news and weather on Norma Ashby's "Today in Mon-tana" show for many years. His voice was a familiar one on com-mercial voiceovers and station ID's.
Active in community service, Mr. Lockwood was on the Salvation Army advisory board for 15 years. He was chairman when the Salva-tion Army's Family and Youth Center was built. He also worked with the Montana Council of Boy Scouts and was a longtime member of the Kiwanis.
Memorials are suggested to the Salvation Army. Condolences may be sent online to schniderfuneral-home.com and/or greatfallstrib-une.com/obituaries.

I will always remember the times I shared with Glenn and Billie as I grew up. He shared his home and his time. I could stop by the corner house any time to come and visit, walk with Glenn in his yard as he trimmed the lawn and trees. There was always a kind friend to visit in their house. My heart and prayers are with you, Billie, in your time of loss.

A true Gentlman who will be greatly missed. Glenn and KRTV had more influence on my early life then any other factor. Unfortunatly I never made the time to say thanks.

Growing up and watching Glenn, I will always remember his professional demeanor as well as his kind and mellow voice on KRTV. I never dreamed that one day I would work at the same station that he helped develop. As an adult I became a friend and not just a viewer and fan. Our prayers are with you all. We will miss him greatly.

Glenn Lockwood was a true television pioneer and a very nice man. I had the privilege of working with him, learning from him and laughing with him for 15 years.
KRTV was a special place for many years. Glenn Lockwood was a big reason.

Growing up in Montana, Glenn Lockwood was an institution in broadcasting. When I worked for the Montana Television Network, it was people like Glenn and Norma Ashby that bought out the the great things we have come to know about the great state of Montana. You will be missed.
