Helen Irene Carney
Helen Irene (Lackman) Carney, 76, of Great Falls, a retired secretary for Consolidated Freightways in Billings, died of multiple sclerosis Tuesday at a Great Falls nursing home.
A private family service will be held at a later date. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chapel of Chimes Funeral Home.
Survivors include her husband, Robert "Bob" Carney of Great Falls; son Steve (Laura) Carney of Boulder; granddaughters Rebecca (Jim) Averill and Stephanie Carney of Boulder; and great-grandchildren Tori, Kaera and Maddy Averill, and Kyler Frazier of Boulder.
Helen was born at home in Yellowstone County on March 18, 1934. She was the youngest child in a large farming family. She was part of the graduating class of 1951 from Senior High School in Billings, Mont.
Helen worked as a secretary for Consolidated Freightways in Billings, and that is where she met her future husband and love of her life, Robert G. "Bob" Carney. Helen and Bob were married in Billings in 1954. They loved to go dancing every weekend and spend time in the company of their many siblings. Helen chose to be a stay-at-home mom when their first and only child, Steven Lorin Carney, was born in 1962.
Helen was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis several years after Steve was born. She battled her disease with courage and fortitude for many years. She did her best to keep her spirits up and those of everyone around her, too. She will always be remembered for her smile and her infectious giggle.
Helen lost her battle against MS on April 20, 2010, at Missouri River Care & Rehabilitation Center, when the Lord called her home to rest. Her indomitable spirit will be remembered by the family she has left behind.
