Nicholas Browning Obituary

MARINA DEL RAY, Calif. - Nicholas H. Browning III, 64, a Great Falls native and former Belt resident, died of cancer Sunday, July 24, in a Los Angeles hospital.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Rice Funeral Home of Torrance, Calif., has handled the arrangements.

Nick is survived by his wife, Kathy Browning; brother Richard A. (Coleen) Browning; sister, Barbara (Martin) Winder; nieces Heidi Browning (Andrew) Pearson and Kari Winder (Christopher) Shirley; and nephew Jason (Kristin) Winder.

Nick was born in Great Falls on Nov. 17, 1946, and raised in Belt, where he enjoyed time with this family and friends in the great outdoors. He graduated from the University of Montana with a degree in business administration and headed to California to pursue a career in the banking business. He soon realized his true passion was law, and earned a law degree at Southwestern University School of Law in 1975. Nick returned to Montana, where he practiced law and married Kathy Kensmoe. They moved back to Los Angeles, and made their home in Marina Del Rey for 35 years.

Nick was an accomplished attorney, specializing in antitrust & unfair competition, environ-mental law and real property law. Nick spent the majority of his legal career working at two firms: Hertzfeld & Rubin, LLP and his own firm, Beck and Browning, where he provided legal counsel to leading global brands such as Ferrari, Porsche, Hyundai, Quick-silver and others. For the past decade, his practice was primarily devoted to real estate development and construction, where he participated in the development of a 90,000-square-foot automotive design center in Orange County, Calif., and was selected as part of the senior management team for the development and construction of a 4,500-acre automotive proving ground in the Mojave Desert.

Nick's Montana roots and California lifestyle fueled his passion for the outdoors. He loved golf, horseback riding, shooting trap and skeet, the ocean and driving his Porsche. Nick's adventurous spirit inspired him to earn his pilot's license in Big Sky Country. Nick loved to spend time with his dogs over the years, taking them for walks every day as the sun rose and set over his beautiful marina home. Nick will always be remembered as a man of great fortitude, magnanimous spirit, unwavering loyalty and a heart of gold.

Donations may be made in Nick's honor to the American Cancer Society or Belt Volunteer Ambulance, Belt, MT 59412.

Dear Browning Family,
I was so sorry to read that Nick lost his battle with cancer. I've wondered how he was doing every since Barb told me of his diagnosis and his corageous fight.
It was great seeing him at a couple stockholders meetings in the past few years. We had good times as kids and it was wonderful connecting with him after all these years. He sounded so happy with where he lived and his life.
Again my condolences. He was much too young and vibrant to be gone.

Dear Kathy,
I am so sorry for your loss. Nick sounds like a great guy, an extraordinary attorney. Have not seen you for a long time. Missed you at the 40th but your time was better spent with Nick. Remembering our school days and Our Savior's. Thinking of you with much sympathy and love,

I hadn't seen Nick but once since he graduated from high school. What a shock when I heard of his health problems. There are no words to express my sorrow for those he left behind. May God Bless.

I didn't know Nick, but I'll be my brothers did...Jerry and Gary Gliko. I babysat for Barb, once at their folks' place...I always thought Mr. & Mrs. Browning were so awful nice...Jule was a good friend to dad...all the years we lived across the street from the Belt Valley Bank. I think he may have been the lst one dad called, the time Mom came home from school for lunch and started a roast on the burner for supper..she forgot all about it....Dad was down for a nap...the next thing he knew...the house was filled with smoke. We all got home in time to see all the firemen leaving the house!!!! We were always so thankful for Jule's friendship with Dad....take care...Becky (Urick) Murray

As Nick's cousin...one of many who would enjoy Montana summer vacations floating down creeks, picking berries and catching an occasional fish...I watched him grow from a rambunctious young boy to a very smooth and gracious man. He was an expert at playing mischievous jokes and had a twinkle in his eye that let you know the main reason for the joke was to share a moment of laughter. Sorry we didn't keep in touch as we got older...meeting occasionally at family funerals...but there was always a connection going back to the creek-floating, berry-picking days that would put smiles on both of our faces. Love to his sister and "little" brother,
