Robert Lee Obituary

FAIRFIELD - Lifelong Greenfields Bench resident Robert O. Lee, 90, former president of the Greenfields Irrigation District Board, died of cancer Saturday at his home.
His funeral is 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fairfield. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Croxford Funeral Home and Cre-matory.
Survivors include his wife, Eleanor; his six children, Arlene (Gerald) Trebesch, Robert (Gail) Lee, Ken (Darlene) Lee, Bruce (Sally) Lee, Marc (Linda) Lee, and Rebecca (Wain) Allen; an 'adopted' son, Dale A. Evans; 20 grandchil-dren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth; and a toddler sister, Doris.
Robert was born April 8, 1917, on the farm of his Norwegian immigrant parents, Peder and Margaret (Grasdock) Lee. He died on the farm one mile from his birthplace Dec. 15, 2007 having lived his entire life on the Greenfields Bench.
In this 90-year span, he witnessed the breaking up of the native prairie. Robert had an abid-ing love for the prairie, its soil, its plants and animals, and all things wild, especially its birds. He had a special appreciation and love for his own animals, from the widely recognized purebred Chester white hogs he raised with his father to his Hereford-shorthorn cross cattle, and his horses to his border collies and finally, the cat, Thor.
Robert experienced the Greenfield Bench prior to irrigation. When the first water flowed down the canal, he exclaimed as a young boy, "Munga, munga vatin i dag" (Norwegian for: "Many, many waters today"). He then served on the Greenfields Irrigation District Board from Sept. 21, 1954, when he was appointed to fill the vacancy created by the death of his father. He resigned as president of the board on Aug. 6, 1975. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church which his grandfather and father helped build. Robert was active on many community boards including the school board. He was a 4-H leader and was instrumental in starting hospice in Teton County. He had an avid interest in current events, politics and government.
He graduated in 1940 from Mon-tana State University in Bozeman, and he married Eleanor Loomis on June 15, 1941. She has remained as the calm and steady pillar of his life for 66 years. Robert frequently voiced his appreciation for her and expressed his love and affection to the end. Together they raised six children. Robert set a high bar of accountability for himself and his six children. He taught his children to look out for the underdog.
Robert loved the outdoors and travel. He and Eleanor made several trips to Europe, especially Norway, and traveled widely elsewhere. They spent 21 winters in Maui in later years.
Memorial contributions may be made to Peace Hospice of Teton County, P.O. Box 455, Choteau, MT 59422.

Dear Lee Family,

Our sympathy and prayers to all of you on the death of Robert. We feel privileged to have known him and to spend many enjoyable days with Robert and Eleanor while they visited Maui. We enjoyed many meals with them on our lanai, overlooking Kahului Bay and Haleakala. Other memories included a very cold night in a rustic cabin in Poli Poli Forest Reserve, at the 8000 foot level on Haleakala, hikes together in various parts of the island and having Bob accompany on some of my plumbing repair trips.

We spent several nights, at their home, with the Lees on several occasions and had our adventures in Montana with them also, including a backpacking trip Into the Bob Marshall Wilderness. Our last visit with the Lees was on October 29, 2007 when we stopped in for a short visit before returning home to Maui. Both Bob and Eleanor were in good spirits and we all enjoyed the visit.

Dear Lee Family,
My sympathy and prayers to you all at the death of Robert. He and all of you have been such a gift to my life. I consider Robert a father in faith. Someone with whom I worshipped as a small child. One whose family built a church in which I grew so that I and many others could recieve the gift of community and the gift of faith, the greatest gift. A quiet and steady man in the "Lee" way. A man of the earth. A man of community. A man who saw the seed die every fall and rise again in the spring. I am grateful to Robert and Eleanor for the family they brought to birth. Many of you have consistently welcomed me into your homes, lives and laughter with open arms all through my life.

I loved Robert's quote as a child about the first waters to come through the Greenfield Irrigation district-"many, many waters today". It reminds me of the many waters that God created and separated in the beginning. And the many waters of the flood, Noah's family, and all the animals. And the many waters of Jesus' baptism. The many waters into which Robert was baptized- the promise of God's claim upon him through Christ Jesus in life and in death. The promise that though the seed must die, it will one day rise again to life.

Peace to you all.

To The Lee Family ~ Robert was the neighbor down the road from parent's farm - Cliff and Cheri Schmidt and even my grandparents - Jacob and Karolina Schmidt. I enjoyed visiting with Robert when I was in church with my parents. He was a great man and a wonderful spirit. He was always very kind to me as a child and into my adult years. I will miss him! Your whole family is in my thoughts and prayers.

Grandpa was a very strong and tender family man.
As 1 of his many grandchildren, I witnessed and received the individual, special attention he gave to each and every one of his grandkids and great grandchildren. His passion and care for animals and for nature was very special to me. These traits have been passed to each of his children who have then passed them on to their kids. Thank you Grandpa for everything you have taught us.

Read of the passing of your father in the Tribune. I went through that in 2001. Tough to lose a parent. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
