Arlene Hyland Obituary
Arlene Hyland, 81, Oconto Falls, died peacefully Monday morning, June 13, 2011, at Bellin Memorial Hospital following complications from a stroke she suffered five years ago. She was born January 6, 1930, in Hermansville, MI, to Vern and Anna (Ayotte) Secrist. Arlene grew up in the Kingsford, MI, where she graduated high school with the class of 1948. Following graduation, she went to work at Bell Telephone.
On March 22, 1951, she married Joe "Reub" Hyland in Louisiana where her husband was serving in the military, prior to his departure to Korea and Japan during the Korean Conflict. The couple moved to Oconto Falls in 1953 where they raised three children. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Oconto Falls. Arlene will fondly be remembered for her love of all children, especially her grandchildren. She also enjoyed annual family fishing trips to Canada, bird watching, reading, flower gardening, following the Packers and keeping abreast of current events. Following retirement, she and her husband enjoyed traveling different parts of the United States.
Survivors are her devoted husband of 60 years, Joe "Reub" Hyland, Oconto Falls; their two children, Susan Hyland and Tom (Laurie) Hyland, all of Green Bay; her five grandchildren of whom she loved so dearly, "JJ" (Jenni) and Michael (Amber) Hyland; Ivy and Maggie Okoniewski; Jacqueline Hyland; two great grandchildren, Alexandra and Romy Hyland; three brothers, Roger (Connie) Secrist, Channing, MI; Donald (Barbara) Secrist, Kingsford, MI; Bruce (Marlene) Secrist, Niagra; one sister, Connie (Dwight) Secrist, Little Suamico; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, John Hyland, two brothers, Marvin and Ed "Sonny" Secrist and one sister, Doris Hoynacke.
Friends may call at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Oconto Falls after 10 a.m. Friday, June 17, 2011, until the time of service. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. Fr. Joel Sember officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Thinking of you all and remembering Arlene very fondly. She was a beautiful woman inside and out. I remember her smile and the sparkle in her eyes. Her love of her family was evident in her words and deeds. Just an all around wonderful person. I am so glad I got to know her in my lifetime.
