Mary Ann Phelps O'Callaghan

Portland, OR - Mary Ann Phelps O'Callaghan, 88, passed away on April 19, 2018, at her home in Portland, Oregon. She was born on June 11, 1929, in Salem, Oregon, to John Franklin Phelps, Jr., and Aletha Bird Phelps. Mary Ann attended the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. While pursuing a Master's Degree in Journalism at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, she met and married the love of her life, William Jude O'Callaghan. Mary Ann and Bill moved to Green Bay, Wisconsin, where they became a part of the Saint Norbert College community and raised their family. Mary Ann was a well-travelled life-long learner who enjoyed playing bridge. Her skilled hands mastered any type of needlework, including knitting, sewing, and cross stitch. An avid reader, she finished her last novel two days before her death. Mary Ann was preceded in death by her husband, her twin grandsons Thomas and Augustine O'Callaghan, her parents, and her brother John Franklin Phelps, III. Mary Ann is remembered with love by her children Mary Aletha Hamiter (Todd) of Minnetonka, Minnesota, Joan O'Callaghan of Beaverton, Oregon, Michael O'Callaghan (Cheryll) of Green Bay, Wisconsin, and John O'Callaghan (Mary) of South Bend, Indiana; her grandchildren Harry and Annie Hamiter, Liam, Lauren, Ian, and Kayleigh O'Callaghan, William, Kathryn, Caroline, Daniel, and Thomas O'Callaghan; and her great-grandchildren Liam and Lily O'Callaghan, and Michael Dey. Mary Ann was laid to rest with her husband and her parents on April 27, 2018, at Saint Joseph's Cemetery, San Pablo, California. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to the William J. O'Callaghan Award in the Arts and Sciences at Saint Norbert College, 316 Third Street De Pere, Wisconsin 54115.
