XENIA — Jack Thomas Schafer, age 90, of Xenia, passed away Tuesday, November 16, 2021 at Hospice of Dayton. Jack was born September 23, 1931 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin the son of Clarence G. and Ruth (Young) Schafer. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 66 years, Carolyn (Cromer) Schafer; an infant daughter: Carolyn Denise; and his brother: Donald L. Schafer. He is survived by children: J. Thomas Schafer Jr. (Vicki) of Xenia; Debra Schafer of Eaton and Michael L. Schafer (Dorina) of Xenia; 6 grandchildren: Bethany (Jesse) Rubio; Carissa (Randall) Haines; Jessica Schafer; Ty (Jacquie) Stollings; Andrew and Alex Schafer; 6 great grandchildren; 5 step grandchildren; and 1 step great grandchild; sisters-in-law: Virginia Schafer of FL and Phyllis Schafer of Springfield, OH; as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Jack graduated from Xenia Central High School and served in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was a 60 year member of the Xenia Lodge #49 F&AM. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Dayton and OES #262. He had been the Past President of the Xenia Optimist Club and Past President of the Cox Elementary PTO. He and his wife were members of the West Minster Presbyterian Church for over 60 years. They also enjoyed spending time at their place at Grand Lake St. Mary's for numerous years, where he especially enjoyed fishing. He retired from Polycel. He proudly served as Major with the Auxiliary Ohio State Highway Patrol and was a loyal employee of McColaugh Funeral Home. Jack had been a very devoted husband. Jack ("Dad/Papaw") will be remembered for many things including the calls he made to everyone on their birthdays, anniversary and other special dates. He was also known for handing out a cinnamon candy to everyone. His warm smile and gentle manner will be missed. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Honor Flight in his memory. Services will be held 11:30 AM Tuesday, November 23rd at McColaugh Funeral Home, 826 N. Detroit Street, Xenia, OH, with Rev. Kevin J. Murphy officiating. He will be interred with his wife at Valley View Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held 10:30 AM Tuesday until the time of service at the funeral home. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.mccolaughfuneralhome.com.
