Bobbie Sue Black Quarles

1935 - 2024

Bobbie Sue Black Quarles, 88, of Greeneville, passed away Friday at The University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.

She was born Feb. 12, 1935, in Paris, Tennessee. Bobbie graduated from Grove Tower High School in Paris and then became a proud Volunteer at The University of Tennessee in Knoxville where she obtained a bachelor's degree in education.

She began her teaching career at Morristown High School in Morristown teaching physical education. It is there that she met the love of her life, Frederick Line Quarles. They married in 1959 and later moved to Greeneville.

Bobbie retired from The Greene County School system in 1995 after teaching at the elementary and high school levels for more than 30 years. Throughout her career, she touched countless lives with her high expectations, her contagious smile, and her unwavering kindness.

She was a faithful member of Greeneville Cumberland Presbyterian Church where she attended The Covenant Life Sunday school class for more than 50 years.

Bobbie was a member of The Andrew Johnson Club and attended as long as her health permitted. Her unfailing faith in God, her steadfast devotion to her family and friends and her love for The University of Tennessee were the most important aspects of her life. She was an avid spectator of all types of sports with football being her favorite! Bobbie was always proud to say that she had been a faithful University of Tennessee season ticket holder since she was a student at UT! "Go Vols" was one of her favorite sayings! It is no surprise that her favorite colors were orange and white!

One of her favorite activities was to watch her beloved grandchildren play sports. Some of her fondest memories were made during weekend trips to Douglas Lake. She was delighted to tell people that she had water skied well into her 70s! Another great pleasure of hers was to cook for those whom she dearly loved. She was an excellent cook and those who are fortunate enough to remember her five flavored pound cakes, pecan pies and chicken casseroles are truly blessed!

Bobbie was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years: Frederick Line Quarles; his parents: John Isaac and Allie Biter Black; sisters: Margaret Ann Black (Bill) Ealy, and Jane Black (Charles) McMurray; a brother: John Daniel (Julia) Black; and a nephew: Howard Wayne Quarles.

She is survived by a dear son: Jon Michael (Patricia); beloved grandchildren: Ina Caroline and Jon Wesley (Alexa); a sister-in-law: Nancy Vineyard Quarles; a special caregiver and friend: Teresa Sweet; and several special nieces and nephews who affectionately referred to her as "Aunt Bobbie."

The family said we rejoice as Matthew 25:21 reads, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant; thou has been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler of many things: enter thou into the joy of thy Lord."

A graveside service will be Friday at 11 a.m. in Shiloh Cemetery with the Rev. Tammy Greene officiating.
