MORRISTOWN - Sammy Lynn Harrison, 81, of Lowland Pike, Morristown, went to be with the Lord Friday morning from his home, after a brief illness.
He was the second oldest of three sons of the late Marvin and Kate Harrison. He grew up in the Greystone community which he also referred to as "God's Country."
He traveled extensively as a baseball pitcher for the San Francisco Giants minor league teams and loved seeing the country as the played the sport. He always excelled in sports, mainly basketball and baseball but loved bird hunting and fishing.
He was a proud veteran, having served in the U.S. Army Reserves.
He attended Bethel Baptist Church faithfully as long as his health permitted and delighted in being the food coordinator for special occasions.
He was formerly employed at TN Electro-Minerals and later retired at Doehler-Jarvis. After his retirement he loved spending time with his grandchildren, whom he raised.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife: Nancy Carter Harrison; a son: Jodie Lynn Harrison; a brother: Ted Harrison; brother-in-law: Delmont Beach; and a nephew: Larry Beach.
He leaves behind a loving extended family. His wife of 26 years: Maxine Harrison; her two daughters and a son-in-law: Kim Talley and Milton, and Lea Ann Laster; his daughter: Amy Harrison of New Hampshire; two grandchildren: Blake Gray and Samantha Gray; and a very special great-grandson: Phoenix Watson; a brother: Terry Harrison; two sisters: Marlene Beach and Judy Harrison; nephews and their wives: Jeff and Teresa Beach, Carolyn Beach, Ben and Kari Harrison, T.J. Harrison, Mike, Ricky and Tony Martin; a brother-in-law: Billy Ray (Sennie) Martin; and special friends: Johnny Campbell, Jimmy Kirk, and Bill Dishner.
The family received friends Sunday at Bethel Baptist Church, 3030 Bethel Road, Morristown. The funeral and graveside service followed in the church cemetery. Officiating was the Rev. Bobby Kitts, the Rev. Shane Johnston, and the Rev. Scott Helton.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Bethel Baptist Church.
