Tom Parker Obituary

Tom Parker went home to be with his Lord and Savior Wednesday while surrounded by family and friends at the Johnson City Medical Center.

He was preceded in death by his mother: Frona Parker; his beloved aunt: Jessie McCreery; and brothers: Billy Ray McCurry of North Carolina and Bud Parker of Virginia.

Survivors include the love of his life of 57 years: Jill Parker; their two children: Eric (Stephanie) Parker, and Erica (Randy) Brown; five grandchildren: Jacob Parker, Sidney Parker, Tyler Brown, Elijah Brown, and Isaac Brown, all of Greeneville; a sister-in-law: Judy McCurry of North Carolina; and special family friends: Karen Strange, Charlie Strange, Nikki Fellars, Terry Kidd, Fran Alexander, Ray Adams, Marshall Weems, Bill Bradley and Mary Sue Brakebill.

Tom was born in the mountains of North Carolina in 1941. Upon graduating high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force in 1959 and served until 1963 as a member of the Air Police where he was stationed in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Tom served in Germany during the Berlin crisis where he was tasked with guarding an air base. After closing the Myrtle Beach base, Warbird Park was established where a monument wall was erected with the names of all those who served at the base and defended their country.

After leaving the U.S. Air Force, he went on to attend Warren Wilson College for two years. He pursued his bachelor's degree at East Tennessee State University and later went on to receive his master's degree at Virginia Intermont College. He served the Greeneville community as the Director of the Nolichuckey Mental Health Center and later Frontier Health as an Executive Vice President until his retirement in 1998.

He will always be remembered as a loving husband, the greatest father two children could have ever been blessed with, and a devoted and proud grandfather of his five grandchildren. Tom was a true friend to everyone that was blessed to know him.

The family will have a private service at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Isaiah House or the local Food Bank.

Doughty-Stevens Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
