Gary Wilson Obituary

Gary William Wilson, of Springport, IN and formerly of Greenfield, IN passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 15, 2025 at Ball Hospital in Muncie, IN at the age of 87. Born on June 25, 1938, Gary was the son of the late Berlin L. and Ethel Irene (Dugan) Wilson, Sr.

He grew up on a farm in Greenfield, IN, was a 1956 graduate of Hancock Central High School, and a proud member of the basketball team. During his senior year, his basketball team won both their county and sectional championships, but in the regional finals, lost to Crispus Attucks HS, who went on to win the state championship. This earned Gary and his team-mates recognition in the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in New Castle. He went on to attend Anderson University and Ball State University.

Gary was the former co-owner of the Wilson Pure Oil Station in Greenfield, worked for the New York Central Railroad in Indianapolis, and was the first manager of the Burger Chef in Greenfield (now Hardee's on US40). Most of his life's work was as a skilled hydraulics mechanic with Townsend Tree Service of Yorktown. He traveled vastly around the country helping with emergency/disaster relief.

Gary loved spending time with his family, enjoyed watching NFL football games (Go Colts!), being outdoors, and hunting and 4-wheeling in Colorado. He grew up at Curry's Chapel United Methodist Church and served on the Curry's Chapel Cemetery Board for many years where he spent many years working to maintain the cemetery. He was a generous man, had a great sense of humor, and always made people feel like family.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Darlene C. Wilson and is survived by his former wife Barbara Sims Kyser. He is survived by a daughter, Cathy Harris (Tom) of Greenfield, and three sons, Michael D. Wilson (Theresa) of Mooresville, Michel F. Wilson (Tim Whicker) of Illinois, and Jason Wilson (Lynn) of Springport; five grandchildren, Megan Harris Marlatt (Steve), Christopher "Chris" Harris (Sayuri), Meredith Harris Sherrier (Cody), Timothy Wilson (Gabbie), and Tyler Wilson (Sarah); six great-grandchildren, Lizzie Harris, Hiro Harris, Taiga Harris, Bailey Sherrier, Hazel Wilson, Hank Marlatt, and soon-to-be born grandson Wilson; brothers, Barry Wilson and Ronald Wilson (Judy); and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Berlin L. Wilson, Jr., Lanny Wilson, Steve Wilson, and sister, Linda Wilson Barnett.
