Herman Schaekel Obituary

Herman William Schaekel, Jr., 101, of McCordsville, passed away Thursday, November 30, 2023. He was born August 28, 1922, in Wanamaker, IN to Herman and Grace (Murnan) Schaekel. Herman graduated from Franklin Central High School and retired from Penn Central/Conrail Railroad. Following his retirement, Herman worked part-time at the Hancock County Farm Service Agency.

Herman volunteered at Hancock Regional Hospital and had been a member of the Fortville First United Methodist Church, Fortville F & AM Lodge No. 207- a 75+ year Mason, Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis and the Christian Laymen Fellowship. He also farmed and enjoyed years doing 4H with his children showing pigs and cows. He loved basketball, especially the Indiana Pacers, and he had coached a Special Olympics Basketball team that was very dear to him.

Herman is survived by son William (Debra) Schaekel of Columbia, SC; daughter Cheryl (Stan) Palma of Indianapolis; daughter Vickie (Eugene) Delaney of Jacksonville, FL; son Richard (Kathryn) Schaekel of Alliance, NE; five beloved grandchildren: Amanda Schaekel, Devon Delaney, Julie Hamburger, Jennifer Delaney, and John Schaekel; four great-grandchildren Ava, AJ, Eli, and Chelsea; and his sister Dorothy Menard. He was preceded in death by his wife Irma, and parents.

A memorial service to celebrate Herman's life will be held at a later date. Herman's final resting place will be beside his wife Irma at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to The Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org or Special Olympics at www.support.specialolympics.org.
