Aurora Almy Obituary

Aurora Pagán Almy

July 18, 1936 - July 1, 2025

Aurora Pagán Almy, 88, passed away surrounded by family on July 1, 2025, in Greensboro, NC.

Born on July 18, 1936, in Manhattan, NY, Aurora returned with her family to their native Puerto Rico when she was a few weeks old. She was raised in Mayagüez.

Aurora grew up in a large, loving extended family. In school, she played pitcher for the girls' softball team, was head cheerleader, and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the Polytechnic Institute (now Inter American University) of Puerto Rico, in San Germán. Her friendly and outgoing personality earned her a position on the Hospitality and Welcoming Committee, where she met and guided Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on a campus tour.

Her first job was in the mountains of Puerto Rico, serving as an Agricultural Extension agent. Later she worked as an office manager and photography assistant in a professional portrait studio.

On March 2, 1963, Aurora married Charles C. Almy, Jr., of Houston, TX. They left Puerto Rico that day to begin life together in the United States where she taught Spanish to middle school students in Houston. In 1965, they moved to New Orleans, LA, and started their family. In 1972, the family settled in Greensboro, NC and welcomed the last of their four children. Aurora devoted herself to raising her family, volunteering in their schools and supporting activities including soccer, horseback riding, baseball, PTA, Greensboro Gem & Mineral Club, and the Science Center. As a member of Christ United Methodist Church, she participated in UMW Circle 6. She was passionate about serving as a Spanish interpreter for medical and construction mission teams to Bolivia and the Dominican Republic alongside her church and family.

Aurora also assisted local law enforcement in Greensboro and Guilford County as a translator for the Spanish speaking community. As a Guilford College faculty wife, she was engaged in campus life and community service. She was also a long time member of the Guilford College Art Appreciation Club, Gourmet Club, and shared her beautiful voice in the Guilford holiday choir. As lovers of flowers and nature, Aurora and Charles were proud to be Master Gardeners. In retirement, they became residents of the WhiteStone Community, where she served on the Marketing Committee, welcoming new residents.

Known for her generosity of spirit, kindness, unconditional love, and the ability to make everyone she met feel special, she enjoyed adopting friends as family. Married for over 50 years, their legacy is the joy they found in raising four children and the delight that seven grandchildren brought to their lives. Abuelita Aurora was always up for an adventure, card game, or party; she loved baseball, Christmas, and especially celebrating Three Kings and Mardi Gras.

Aurora is predeceased by her parents, Eduardo Pagán Tomei and Teresa Julia Miranda Núñez; her sister, Carmen Amalia Pagán Miranda; and husband, Charles Coit Almy, Jr.

Aurora is lovingly remembered and survived by her children: Julia Irene Geniac (Joe), Jessica Eileen Almy-Pagán, Charles Edward Almy (Beth), and Teresa Almy Slack (Munsey); and her seven grandchildren: Tori and Peter Geniac; Caroline, Miranda, and Nick Almy; Coit and Thad Slack.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Christ United Methodist Church, 410 North Holden Road, Greensboro, NC 27410, on Friday, August 1, 2025, at 1 p.m., with visitation to follow.

I am Nitza (aka Tita), your uncle Enrique's daughter and Aurora's and Carmen's cousin. Your mother's smile, gentleness, beautiful eyes are always remembered. She belonged to my sister Evelyn (Billie)'s generation whose love to serve others was their lives. I was only 9 years old when she married your father and left to the United States. Tried to contact her through her Facebook page, but since no one appeared to know about many Puerto Rican relatives, no response was received. Still, family is lived and never forgotten. May her spirit fill God's paradise with joy.

I met Mrs Almy and her family while coaching Charles in little league baseball and I still remember what a nice person she was and what a great family she had. Charles, my thoughts are with you and your sisters.

My dear and sweet cousin Aurora is resting in the lovingly arms of God, with her love of hos life Charles , her dear sister Carmen Amalia, and Tio Eduardo and Titi Teresa. Reading her biography o got to know her life; she accomplished so many things, she helped so many people in many ways, her noble heart, her kindness, her humbleness, all part of an exceptional human being. Charles was in my water aerobics class and Aurora was right beside him every day. She threw a baby shower for me for my last baby. What a special woman your mom was and made everyone feel special. I´m sorry I cannot be there to honor her and your family at the funeral! Prayers for you all!
