Barton Parks Obituary

Barton A Parks

March 29, 1938 - October 12, 2024

Dr. Barton A. Parks Jr, 86, died peacefully in his sleep October 12, 2024. He was born March 29, 1938 to Barton A. Parks Sr. and Dora Priour Parks in Corpus Christi, Texas. Here he spent his first 12 years surrounded by his 23 first cousins, and aunts, uncles, grandparents -- a time he cherished the rest of his life.

After graduating from Alamo Heights High School in San Antonio, he earned his BA in Philosophy at Rice University then went onto University of Texas at Austin where he met his future wife Evelyn. They spent their honeymoon driving up to Buffalo NY where Barton earned his MA/PhD in Sociology/Social Theory.

He taught sociology at Middlebury College and Windham College in Vermont, and at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. He taught Criminal Justice at Indiana University, then moved the family to Greensboro, NC to chair what he helped evolve into the Justice and Policy Studies department at Guilford College. Many former students sought him out as they grew older to express their gratitude for the positive impact he had on their lives, a testament to his dedication and influence as an educator.

Throughout his 30 years at Guilford College, Barton increasingly branched out into the community and brought lessons he learned from the community into his classes. He coordinated multiple efforts to assist citizens in solving community problems and obtaining needed services where none were available.

In 1982, he helped form One Step Further, a mediation center for adults, youth, parents and families to take positive steps during times of personal crisis and conflict. In 1987 Barton led the effort to open a Delancey Street Foundation site in Greensboro, a rigorous self-help approach for alternative sentencing of offenders.

He was also instrumental in forming Project Greensboro in 1992, an organization designed to restore safety and security to neighborhoods with high crime and low income. He began as chairman, then a member of its board of directors.

In 1996, Barton was honored with the Charles Duncan McIver award - UNCG's highest award for service established to recognize North Carolinians who have rendered distinguished public service to the state or nation.

After Barton's adventurous spirit led him on an Outward Bound course in his late 40s, he helped start a ropes course at Guilford College and was one of its first course facilitators. On his 70th birthday, he was thrilled to successfully skydive. He had a profound appreciation for travel and the chance to immerse in diverse cultures. His time in Rovinj, Croatia and Prague, Czechia with his wife held special places in his heart. He also enjoyed teaching three semesters abroad London '73, Guadalajara '96 and Shanghai '13.

A self-identified stereo fanatic, Barton was constantly buying/selling new and old equipment for his foam-insulated music room in search of perfect sound quality. Visitors were treated to a strategically-placed chair from which they would hear music in stereo sounding as if they were in the presence of live musicians. He was an avid walker and enjoyed walking with friends, family and dogs over the years.

Barton was predeceased by his parents, brother Clarence Parks and sister Barbara Zelle. He is survived by his wife of nearly 61 years, Evelyn Bailey Parks of Greensboro, NC, his daughters Lisa Parks of Greensboro and Amanda Parks of Richmond, VA, and extended family across Texas, North Carolina and the Midwest.

The family wants to thank the staff at Friends Homes Guilford for their dedication, kindness and care. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Delancey Street Foundation, 600 Embarcadero, San Francisco, CA 94107. Online condolences can be made at triadfuneralservice.com.

I was a student of Barton's at Middlebury College and later joined his commune in Putney, Vermont, where we lived with his family and fellow students. Most of us had either dropped out or were asked to leave Middlebury after joining in a Vietnam War protest where we "occupied" various school buildings. Barton was a delightful person, my favorite teacher at Middlebury, and a calm, centered, generous housemate. In reading about him, I see that he went on to lead a purposeful life that surely impacted generations of students. Peace be with you, Barton, and your family.

Barton was a wonderful colleague and friend who had a profound impact on my life. I am at Guilford College because of him. He was the principal founder of the community and justice studies major. When I saw the position description, I felt like the job was too good to be true, that it fell from the heavens. And I know that other, more recent colleagues in the major have said the same thing. I learned so much from Barton about community-engaged teaching, and fostering students coming into their own, finding their voices, and sense of agency and power. He was really good at that. He was an excellent listener, and taught others how to be that as well. I was struck and moved by his depth of emotion and strong sense of presence when he was listening to someone. He readily expressed anger and outrage at injustices, and spoke truth to power, drawing on his keen intellect and sharp observations. He also made us laugh.

Evelyn, Amanda, and Lisa, I am thinking of you, and holding you in the Light as you grieve the loss of your beloved life partner and dad.

Rest in power and peace, dear friend and colleague. Your legacy truly lives on in your students, colleagues, friends, and the communities you touched.

Barton was a great man. He always made me laugh and made a point to be there for important events in my life as his niece. He was always fun to be around and always curious, asking lots of questions about everything. I think he had a great curiosity for people and cultures. I will miss him greatly! Love to Evelyn, Lisa, and Amanda.

I loved reading this summary of Barton´s many interests and accomplishments. My brilliant first cousin had special connections to our whole family, and made a special effort to maintain those relationships his entire life. When my mom was in her early 90´s, she had ceased to have any type of extended conversations with us, or anyone, really. Barton came to see her and got her started on memories of her youth, and she talked to him for about an hour. We were all interested and amazed at what she remembered and shared. He knew how to engage anyone in thinking about everything, the sign of a true teacher. I loved him, his brilliant brother Clarence and his beautiful sister Barbara-all distinguished in their own ways. My sincere condolences and love to Evelyn, Lisa and Amanda. He will certainly be missed by all who knew him.

My husband Jim Gutsell, who died July 26, and I were very fond of both Barton and Evelyn Parks. I send my condolences to Evelyn and the family. As his lovely obituary makes clear, Barton had a profoundly beneficial impact on Guilford College and the larger Greensboro community. We need more Barton Parks in our world today. In sympathy, Jane Gutsell

I was a student of Barton´s at Middlebury College in 1968-69, and lived with him, his growing family and other ex-students in Putney, Vermont in 1970-71. His understanding of the social order and its injustices helped frame my world view. It is clear that he was more than an academic even when we first met - willing to try living by his ideals. His subsequent life has shown that he continued to work with those less privileged and fortunate while inspiring many others. Even though we communicated only sporadically over the years, I will still miss him. My condolences to Evelyn, Lisa and Amanda. Barton was a very special soul.

Barton holds a special place in my heart as a colleague at Guilford, a f/Friend at New Garden Meeting, and after his retirement, as a resident at FH where I served as chaplain. We had worked to develop a program for community dialogue which we were unable to complete.

Barton's is a warm and creative soul. Much love to you, Evelyn, Lisa, and Amanda.
