BURNLEY LANKFORD MILES COLFAX COL. BURNLEY Lankford Miles, USAF, ret., of River Landing at Colfax, NC, died Saturday, May 20, 2017 after a long battle with Alzheimer's at the age of 82. Born in Wilmington, DE, Miles is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Madeleine (Kim) Miles, who grew up in Stockbridge, MA. He was predeceased by his parents John B. Miles II and Elizabeth L. Miles, sister Betsy Roadcap and brother John B. Miles III. Miles was a devoted father to three boys: Caleb K. Miles (Catherine) of Southern Pines, NC, Nathaniel C. Miles (Dee Dee) of Centreville, VA, and Benjamin L. Miles (Debbie) of Winchester, VA. A graduate of Brown University (B.S. mathematics), he also attended the University of Pittsburgh (M.S. electrical engineering). While in the Air Force, he served on numerous teams that developed military aircraft, including the A-7, F-111, B-1, as well as upgrades on Air Force One. Later in his career, he commanded a communication base/posts in Europe. After his military service, he worked for AT&T Government Solutions (Greensboro, NC) and Davidson Community College - Advanced Manufacturing Technology. Burnley loved spending time with his eight grandchildren: Caleb, Taylor, Aidan, Kinley, Erika, John, Cindi and Tommy and enjoyed traveling, hiking, camping and challenging them with math games. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Greensboro. Col. Miles burial services with be held this summer at Salisbury (NC) National Cemetery, at a date and time to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to the Alzheimer's Association.
