A dear, dear person who lived his faith, and gave others the courage to live theirs. He will be missed.

´m so sad to hear this but I he know he has richly earned his reward in God´s realm. Of all the people I have known in my life, he had one of the greatest influences on me, especially in my journey as a progressive Christian and a concerned American. In the fall of 1986, I was a young student at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. I came from a small conservative town in western North Carolina and I was looking for a place where I could learn a different approach to the Christian faith. At that time I was questioning much of what I had been taught about the faith. I found what I was looking for at St. Mary´s House. I made new friends there and had some memorable experiences. Under Charlie, I went through confirmation class and became an Episcopalian. I learned more about the faith under Charlie than any person. I also learned about how as people of faith, we must be concerned about social justice and the issues that affect our world. He made you think and he encouraged us students to question what we had been taught and speak out about injustice and oppression. Even though I was there for only a few years, Charlie´s impact on my life is still keenly felt. I can hear his rich voice now and the lessons from his sermons. I have since belonged to different churches and different denominations but Charlie will always be with me. We shall see each other again.

I'm very sorry to hear of Charlie's dying. My condolences to his family and to the scores of those whose lives he enriched in this part of eternity. Whatever the next part of eternity may be like it is brighter for his entrance. But, look out! One champion of the diversity of God's people will surely continue to shake things up! Thank you, Charlie, for your life and witness and love for God's created order in its fullness. Hopefully we'll endeavor to continue your witness!
