Charles Hawes Obituary

Hawes, Charles Morris "Charlie"

January 29, 1938 - July 18, 2022

Reverend Charles Morris Hawes III, age 84, of Alpharetta, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 18, 2022 at Emory Johns Creek Hospital.

Charlie, as he was known, was born on January 29, 1938 in Chicago, Illinois and raised in Yonkers, New York by his parents, the late Mimi and Charles Hawes. He earned a bachelor's degree from Trinity College in Hartford, CT, as well as a master's of divinity from Episcopal Theological School in Cambridge, MA before embarking on a fruitful career in the clergy. Charlie served the Episcopal Church in a variety of roles and locations over many decades, enjoying his lengthiest and most fulfilling tenure serving as chaplain leading the Episcopal Campus & Young Adult Ministries at both UNC-Greensboro's St. Mary's House and nearby Guilford College. Many of the students he worked with have gone on to careers in the church.

In addition to being a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees, Charlie was passionate about travel, art, books, good food and ice-cold vodka martinis. He enjoyed playingâ€"and listening toâ€"jazz piano. Charlie was a friend and source of comfort to every person and animal he ever met. From a young age, he was deeply committed to supporting marginalized communities and individuals many overlooked.

Charlie is preceded in death by his first wife Sheilah James Hawes. He is survived by his second wife Faith Steverman Hawes, brother Peter Wortham Hawes, daughter Kelly (Robert Evans) Hawes and stepchildren Adam (Courtney) Hils, Miriam (Stephen Matkovits) and Jeremy (Teresa) Hils and six grandchildren.

For those who wish to make a donation in Charlie's memory, please consider St. Mary's Episcopal Campus & Young Adult Ministries or All Saints Episcopal Church, both of Greensboro, NC. A memorial service in Greensboro is currently in the planning stages, with a specific date and location to be determined.

A dear, dear person who lived his faith, and gave others the courage to live theirs. He will be missed.

´m so sad to hear this but I he know he has richly earned his reward in God´s realm. Of all the people I have known in my life, he had one of the greatest influences on me, especially in my journey as a progressive Christian and a concerned American. In the fall of 1986, I was a young student at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. I came from a small conservative town in western North Carolina and I was looking for a place where I could learn a different approach to the Christian faith. At that time I was questioning much of what I had been taught about the faith. I found what I was looking for at St. Mary´s House. I made new friends there and had some memorable experiences. Under Charlie, I went through confirmation class and became an Episcopalian. I learned more about the faith under Charlie than any person. I also learned about how as people of faith, we must be concerned about social justice and the issues that affect our world. He made you think and he encouraged us students to question what we had been taught and speak out about injustice and oppression. Even though I was there for only a few years, Charlie´s impact on my life is still keenly felt. I can hear his rich voice now and the lessons from his sermons. I have since belonged to different churches and different denominations but Charlie will always be with me. We shall see each other again.
