David Buster Obituary

Buster, David Lee

David L. Buster, age 91, of Greensboro, passed away Wednesday, December 30, 2020.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday January 2, 2021 at Lawndale Baptist Church. Interment will be private.

Dave was the sixth of seven children born to Howard and Maud Buster. His birthplace was the rural community of "Grassburr," seventeen miles northeast of Post, Texas.

After graduation from Post High School he went to Fort Worth to find work. He enrolled in Texas Christian University and worked part-time to support himself and pay for his advanced education. He subsequently transferred to the University of North Texas at Denton, where he received his bachelor of business administration degree.

It was in Fort Worth where he met the love of his life, Martha Clark, who would later become his wife.

Dave was called into military service, and after satisfying that requirement he returned to Fort Worth, where he and Martha were married. They were blessed with three children, David, Jr., Marla, and Sharon. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were the ultimate joy in his life and their happiness was his happiness.

He went to work for a clothing manufacturer in Fort Worth. Several years later, he was hired by another firm which would eventually become affiliated with the Blue Bell Company (now VFC), headquartered in Greensboro, N.C. Over the years he was transferred several times as he climbed the corporate ladder, including stays in El Paso, Texas, Greensboro, N.C., Nashville, Tenn., and San Antonio, Texas. After a successful career with Blue Bell, Dave retired in 1988 and he and Martha moved back to Greensboro, N.C. During the next several years they enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Additionally, they cruised and toured extensively in Europe, creating memories to last a lifetime.

From the time he was a little boy, Dave loved music. He taught himself to play the guitar and it was a constant in his life. After he retired, he led sing-alongs in nursing homes throughout the area for over twenty years. He was lead singer in a quartet in his church, performing in nursing homes. He was also a member of the "Voices of Experience," the senior choir in his church. He and Martha have been active members of Lawndale Baptist Church for many years. Dave taught Sunday school, served on numerous committees, and was instrumental in organizing a visitation ministry called SOS (Serving Our Seniors). He and Martha headed that organization for nine years before passing leadership to others.

Dave is survived by his loving wife, Martha; son, Dave Buster, Jr. (Dottie); daughters, Marla Riddle (Jeff), and Sharon Hanken (Scott); sister, Cletta Johnson; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Lawndale Baptist Church at 3505 Lawndale Dr, Greensboro, NC 27408.

As Sharon's sis-in-law, I never had the privilege of meeting this wonderful human. But I heard of him often, especially from my brother, Scott. My brother spoke of Dave with such respect and love, and often referred to him as "one of the greatest men I've ever known." I understood Dave to be a man of faith, someone who had incredible business advice, and the most gentle and beautiful hearts on the planet. Even though I did not know Dave personally, I feel I also knew him through his daughter, Sharon. Sharon is incredible, with so many beautiful qualities I can only recognize that her parents are responsible for creating and molding the incredible person that I'm honored to call my sis-in-law. A part of Dave shines in Sharon, so I feel I have known Dave through her. My heart is so sad at this loss, but I'm comforted by the fact that he transitioned peacefully and he has a loving family who will support each other through this tough time. Dave, we love you and will miss you, but just know that you created a beautiful legacy while you blessed us here during your lifetime.

Dave volunteered to sing and play the guitar at several of our Ciba-Geigy events. He was a caring, giving, and wonderful gentleman.
