Dorothy Martin Obituary

Martin, Dorothy B.

July 13, 1932 - November 1, 2022

Born in New York City and transitioned home from Greensboro, North Carolina, Dorothy B. Martin, 1 of 5 children, a graduate of Columbia School of Geriatrics, was born and raised in New York City to George Brangman & Juanita Joyner. Miss Martin spent her teenage summer vacations in Greensboro, North Carolina, caring for the children of Mr. & Mrs. Graham who cherished her wisdom and shining sense of right and wrong. During her senior year of high school, Dorothy was a very talented ballroom dancer until she was almost dropped by her dance partner. She immediately quit dancing, whereupon her partner was devastated, but she never looked back.

Upon graduating from Columbia School of Geriatrics, Dorothy worked as a nurse's & dietary aide at New York's Daughters of Jacob Nursing Home and Lutheran Hospital prior to advancing to nurse's aide in the Surgical Ward of Bronx Lebanon Hospital. During her first 5 years in the medical field, she became a single mother of two boys, but was determined not to let them go without food, a roof over their heads or a dedicated work ethic. At this crossroad between 1958-1964, Robert Martin emotionally uplifted her into securing a position at Italian Hospital before her nurse's aide position in NYU Medical Center's Surgical Intensive Care Unit.

After Dorothy's oldest son, David Reid, passed in New York City in 1974, the spiritual support of Robert Martin and her loving connection to the Graham family prompted her to bring her remaining family to Greensboro in 1977. Despite Mr. Martin's passing prior to settling into their home in Greensboro, and her son Baron Martin's 2015 passing in Greensboro, Dorothy stayed the course to make a significant mark as a home health care attendant for Mr. Julius Pickard and Mr. & Mrs. Willard Brewer; a Wesley Long Hospital's nurse's aide staff member; and ultimately retiring as a nursing technician from Moses H. Cone Hospital's Surgical Intensive Care Unit.

Mrs. Martin's legacy is the indelible impression and righteous influence she left on everyone she loved or worked with. If she knew you, or you met her in passing, you never forget her!

Mrs. Martin is lovingly survived by her sons, Michael Reid (Philip Heckscher), Mr. & Mrs. Derek / Valarie Martin and family; niece, Gladys Brangman; grandchildren, David (1st grandson), Kim Smith & Cathy Joyce, Dacia Martin, Keyshia Martin, Baron Martin Jr., Brenda Martin, mother of Briana Martin and Derek Martin Jr.; plus 14 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren; Eva Murphy and family, Ann Price, Graham family descendants, Julia & Julie Brewer, Ada & Sam Nelson, Betty & Don York, Pastors Norman (deceased) & Teresa Hayes of New Jerusalem congregation.

My condolences to the Martin family. The love Miss Martin gave to everyone she came in contact with was insurmountable. She left a print my morality and instilled a sense of resiliency in your spirit. Miss Martin called me "change " emphasizing my ability to hustle and care for my four sons. I thank God for her strength to reach out and be a strong arm for others while dealing with her own stuff. Thank you Miss Martin, sorry I couldn't be there to hold your hand like you've held mine but just know that I've always held you in my heart. And always will. Rest easy now.

I worked with Miss Dorothy for a number of years at Cone. She was always very caring with her patients. She worked tirelessly until the job was done. I´m glad I met her and am sorry for your loss.
