Edward Sopp Obituary

Sopp, Edward Charles

March 25, 1955 - March 2, 2024

Edward Charles Sopp died Saturday, March 2, 2024 at the age of 68. He is survived by his wife, Anne Marie Sopp, his brother Jerry Sopp and wife, Lolly, his three children, Edward Charles Sopp, Jr. and wife, Colleen, Teresa Marie Tunney and husband, Jeff, and Brian Edward Sopp and wife, Nicole. He is also survived by his nine grandchildren, Mary Sopp, Elizabeth Sopp, Julianne Sopp, Edward Charles Sopp, III, Emelia Warren, Joseph Tunney, Bennett Sopp, Austyn Sopp, and Vienna Sopp.

Ed was born in 1955 in Philadelphia, PA to Edward and Catherine Sopp. Even though Ed moved to Wilmington, Delaware in 1964, his heart never left Philly. After moving to Wilmington, Delaware, Ed went onto graduate from Salesianum High School in 1973 and the University of Delaware in 1977. Ed and Anne, being college sweethearts, married in June 1977 and after living in Newark, Delaware for a year made the trek south to Charlotte, North Carolina in 1978 for Ed to join Wachovia Bank.

Even though Ed had his start in the Northeast, Ed was a true North Carolina banker. He loved his 22 years with the old Wachovia Bank. After Wachovia merged with First Union, Ed continued his banking career with numerous North Carolina community banks, including Lexington State Bank, CommunityOne, and Bank of the Carolinas.

Ed had many loves, the Philadelphia Phillies, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, English and American history, a Philly cheese steak; but what Ed loved most of all was God, his family, his friends, and the people that were around him. Ed was always a very busy man. But he always made time to serve the Church, provide for his family, and support his friend and neighbor. Ed lived Christ's command to "love thy neighbor" to its fullest. As a result, Ed will be greatly missed by too many people to mention here. The world lost a light on Saturday, March 2, 2024.

A visitation will be held on Friday, March 8 beginning at 10 a.m. at Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home. 515 N Elm St, Greensboro, NC 27401. A Funeral Mass will follow at 12 noon at St. Benedict Catholic Church. 109 West Smith Street, Greensboro, NC 27401.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mr. Sopp's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, donate.cancer.org.

As a family friend of Ed's brother Jerry, I shared family occasions and watched a few Notre Dame football games at Jerry's and Lolly's home with Ed and his family when they visited the Newark DE area. Those were the Lou Holtz days when Notre Dame was a powerhouse! I remember Ed was a great guy and he and Jerry must be chips off the old Sopp block!

Over the years when Jerry and I talked about his family, I learned of and admired Ed's dedication to and care of his wife and family, and how Ed handled his own health struggles. Ed's ability to persevere through difficult challenges, provides a strong example for my own faith journey on how to walk in light right through challenging times.

Love and peace to all the Sopp friends and family during this time of loss.

I met Ed and his wife Ann a couple of months ago. I was his healthcare aid. Being with them was a join for me. They were two of the nicest people I've ever met. I enjoyed listening to Ed schoole me on some American history, among other fascinating topics. He was a very sweet man. And I know he'll be missed by everyone that was blessed to make his acquaintance. My heart broke when he left us. RIP Edward Sopp...

Our hearts are heavy with the loss of our good friend Ed. We have been neighbors for 17 years. Loved talking about Philly were we both were from and cooking . He was a gift to this world and I know he is right beside God now.
